Chapter 24 Evan paced back and forth on the front porch at Anne’s house, waiting for her to make her escape. He’d stayed inside as long as he could stand the noise and crowd, long enough to speak to both of her parents. He never had enjoyed huge crowds, certainly not for anything like a funeral. He couldn’t stand to see Mr. Fincastle looking so sad, either. His eyes were too much like Anne’s. Almost an hour later, Evan wasn’t about to leave knowing she needed to talk to him. It seemed like everyone inside had decided to linger all night long. The wait was getting to him. He could see Anne when he passed by the front windows, standing in a group of people he didn’t recognize. Probably relatives from out of town. She didn’t seem particularly happy, but she didn’t have the desperate look
