Chapter 29 Anne walked out of her parents’ house, slamming the door behind her. She pounded on the heavy wood twice, knocking the gigantic wreath and a strand of glittering red and green garland off, trying to keep herself from screaming out loud. Before one of them could open it, she ran down the stairs and across the street to Joe’s filthy Datsun hatchback. He’d refused to go inside as always. This time she was glad he’d stayed out here. She closed the car door a little more quietly. “Let’s go,” she said before he could ask any questions. Anne tried to stop herself, but as Joe pulled away in a cloud of blue smoke, she looked back.
