"Leave him, he doesn't deserve you. Soon he will realize what a wonderful soul you are and want you back, but it will be too late."
These were Ruth's words when Lucy had told her about the rejection, and now two months later, Lucy has to repeat these words to stop herself from picking up the phone beside her bed to call Adam.
After the rejection, she spent one more month in Malaysia, unsure if she really wanted to leave or not, until she started experiencing the telltale signs of pregnancy. She could barely eat anything without rushing to the bathroom to empty the contents of her stomach, was tired all the time, and irritated with everything and everyone. She remembers the fear she had felt just imagining falling pregnant. Don't get her wrong, she really wants a kid, but with how complicated everything is in her life and the fact that he rejected her, becoming a mother is at the bottom of the list of things she wishes to achieve at the moment.
And then she visited the doctor, who, after some tests, confirmed that she was pregnant. She remembers sitting there in the doctor's office for a long time, unaware of her surroundings and just staring into space.
How is she going to fit a baby into her life?
The first thing she did after finding out about the upcoming baby was finalize her transfer from the school (which hadn't been as hard as it had been for Ruth because she had completed one academic year) and left without telling anyone, not even Ruth until she was back in her home country.
She has been staying at a hotel since she got back, and her family doctor has been tending to her daily, as pregnancy doesn't seem to agree with her body. She is constantly sick and has lost some weight because she can't seem to keep anything down.
Only Old Mrs Valle and a few servants are aware of the fact that she is back. The pack members don't know, but that isn't a great deal because her family doesn't live in the pack, and she has had little interaction with her fellow wolves in the past. The people living in her father's house, that is to say, her Uncle, Aunt, and cousins don't know about her presence in the town, and it is of utmost importance that they never find out because they are the last people she wishes to meet.
She is lying on the bed now, trying to ignore the smell of the food she has emptied in the bin on the corner as soon as a servant from home, sent by her grandmother, had left it.
It was so refreshing when she the news of the pregnancy with her grandma and she understood her immediately. The elderly lady was a little disappointed that her mate had to reject Lucy, but as usual, she has been there for her, doing everything she can to make Lucy's life easier.
Lucy is reluctant to return home because of her Uncle Felicio and his family, and Old Mrs Valle assured her that she will find a way to throw the unwelcome family out of the mansion as soon as possible, only then can she feel free to return home.
It is kind of funny that she should avoid going back to the house she grew up in because of people who didn't inherit even a chair in her father's will. They will be sorted out soon, but right now she has to focus on her health.
And deciding what to do with her unborn baby before it's too late.
What would be Adam's reaction if he found out about the pregnancy? He'd probably say he has nothing to do with it; he made it clear he wanted nothing to do with her from the beginning and she insisted on sleeping with him.
"So what do you expect me to do?" she imagines him saying. "That is your own problem. You requested to have s*x with me, not the other way around. My life is busy enough without adding the burden of a kid."
And she wouldn't blame him if he said that; she did suggest the whole thing.
So she has no choice but to deal with this pregnancy alone.
If Adam was too cowardly to accept her as his mate, what makes her think he would accept such a huge responsibility as a child?
Feeling more than a little depressed, she worries about the health of the pup, so she pulls herself to a sitting position. She is going to stretch her legs by going downstairs to the reception area. She heard her cousins have started suspecting she might be back already and have started snooping around trying to confirm, and Lucy intends to warn the receptionist not to reveal to anyone that she's staying at the hotel.
It turns out to be a huge mistake to go to the reception area at this time because, as soon as she greets the woman at the desk, she is surprised by the scent that hits her. She bodily turns to face the entrance to witness the entrance of the meaty man with trousers that might have been in high fashion in the nineteen hundreds, big and loose especially at the legs. She has only seen him dress like that and she has always assumed it is the only way for him to dress comfortably because he is not what you'd call an athletic man. He is fat, his face and cheeks round and pink, and his neck disappeared a long time ago. One glance at him would make you think he is helpless and harmless until he is your step-cousin wishing to marry you.
"Haha, caught you. Thought you'd hide from us forever?" he says as he approaches her, smiling and exposing his yellow teeth as he does so. "I knew you were around somewhere. You can't fool me. And I know you was rejected by your boyfriend."
She doesn't know where he got that information, but it's obvious he has no idea what the rejection he just talked about means. He is human.
"You see, no one else wants you. You are not twenty five yet and you've already lost your appeal to men. I am doing you a favor by offering to marry you."
Lucy wishes they were not in front of several people. No one should hear such things about her. She glances at the lady behind the desk, who is looking confused at what is happening, then at the couple that has just been given a room key. They quickly leave for the room upon meeting her eye, ashamed for not minding their business.
"Austin, I will not allow you to talk to me like that," Lucy says firmly as soon as the couple disappears. "Know your place because this time I am not as kind as I used to be back then." Him making a jab at her self esteem is what has her temper rising rapidly.
"Oh, she grew a backbone," he says, mocking her with an annoying sound of laughter. "Well, it's important that you remember your place as well. As we are talking, all the property is one step away from becoming ours, if that's what is giving you the audacity to talk back at me. Soon as you come home and marry me, everything will be sorted out. We tried forging your signature but it didn't work out, so this has to be the only way...come here you filthy little i***t!"
Austin leaps forward to drag Lucy away, but she is just ready for him.
It is surprising how such a slender girl who appears unwell has managed to land a punch powerful enough to send a heavy man flying into the wall, groaning in pain. She follows him to finish him off, her eyes blazing, but then a couple of guards rush onto the scene and stop her, asking her to calm down.
To wait for the police, more like, she thinks as she hears the unmistakable siren indicating that someone has called the police.
