I smiled as I placed my pup on the table and sat down in front of her. “Welcome home.” I said.
She barked happily and sat down on the table as I leaned back in my chair.
“You’re back.”
I turned around and smiled at my closest friend, Nui.
“We thought you were caught by Arius.”
I snorted and looked back at Pyramid.
“What took you so long?” He asked as he sat down at a seat to my left. “I really did think that Arius’ men got you.”
“Pyramid was kidnapped. I had to get her back.” I said, putting my elbow on the arm of my chair and resting my chin on my palm.
“By who?” Nui asked, raising his thick eyebrows. He didn’t bother to ask why I went through so much trouble for this dog. No one ever did.
I started to smirk. “Arius’ daughter.”
Nui looked surprised.
I looked at him. His black hair had grown so long that it reached past his shoulders and from the back, some might mistake him for a woman. But his height, his build and his terrifying features made it obvious that he was a man.
Especially that scar that went from the top left side of forehead to the bottom right side of his jaw.
“The Princess.” I said. I looked back at Pyramid. “You know what I found funny? She named her Pyramid too. That was strange.” I said. “I guess this dog just looks like a god that should be named Pyramid.”
“Was she pretty?” Nui asked, ignoring what I said. “How old do you think she is?”
I thought for a moment, my head still on my hand. “If I do the math right, she must be seventeen years of age, or eighteen. And yes. She was pretty. Takes after the Queen.”
Nui nodded his head, trying to imagine the girl.
“But she was awfully stupid.” I said. “You’d think that Arius of all Pharaoh’s would educate his child.”
He snorted. “Women.”
I nodded my head. “She didn’t know that Pyramid was a girl. How can someone make a mistake like that?”
“That doesn’t make her stupid.” Nui rolled his eyes. “Just because you know everything there is to know about dogs doesn’t mean that everyone else does.”
“But figuring out a dogs gender isn’t that hard.” I argued, but then shrugged it off. “Forget it.” I said. “I have more important news.”
“And what is that?”
“Are all the men asleep?”
“Yes.”
I smiled. “Good.”
“Why?”
“I have a plan.”
Nui waited for me to keep going.
I felt a thrill rush through me. “Arius’ men are still as weak as they always were.”
“They were strong enough to drive us out of Egypt.” Nui said. His hands suddenly clenched into fists. “That bastard.”
I leaned back in my chair. “Relax Nui.” I said. “The past is the past.”
Nui shook his head. “If I could just kill him… he destroyed our home… took everything we had.”
I kept a smile on my face. It took me three years to be able to control my own rage. Nui however, still hadn’t gotten there. “Nui. We won’t be successful unless we can control our anger.” I said. “What’s our way of life?”
Nui rolled his eyes. “Laugh in the face of our enemies before, during and after we kill them.”
I nodded my head. “Good.” I said. “If we aren’t able to control our anger, how will we be able to humiliate him?”
Nui nodded his head. “Fine, fine. But what exactly is your plan?”
My smile grew. “Arius took everything from us, let’s take everything from him.”
Nui laughed. “You may be the King of Thieves, but how on earth do you plan on doing that?”
I smiled some more. “Nui, my friend, you don’t understand what a man like Arius values.” I said. “What he loves. You don’t understand that.”
“And you do?” He asked. “You? A man who is considered by many to have to coldest heart of them all? What do you know about values?”
He was right. But I smiled. “Do you really think I spent the past two days trying to get Pyramid back?” I asked. “I did a lot more then you think I did.”
“What did you do?” Nui asked, shocked.
“I snuck into the palace and had a preview of Arius’ life.” I said. “And did you know, every night, when all the souls in the palace are fast asleep, Arius visits the room of all his children, all six of them, and gives each and every one of them a kiss before he himself falls asleep.”
Nui raised an eyebrow. “That’s pathetic. But what’s your point.”
“Do you want to know which brat he is closest too?” I asked.
“Who?”
“The eldest daughter.” I said with a grin. “He clearly adores her. His face changes whenever he sees her.”
“That is all nice information. But what do you plan on doing with this information.”
“How do you think he would feel if we took her? Tortured her. Then killed her.”
Now both of Nui’s eyebrows shot up. “But… kidnapping a girl? Torture? You may have no values but… that’s not… you.”
I leaned forward. “It’s necessary to get back at Arius.” I said. “And trust me, the girl’s a b***h and she deserves everything she’s about to get.”
The thought of her tricking me flashed through my mind and my hands balled up into fists.
No one can get away with tricking me like that.
Nui seemed to notice my anger. “Did something happen between you two?”
I stood up. “Of course not.” I said as I picked up Pyramid. “Think this through, Nui. Then let me know what you think.”
He nodded his head. “Does my opinion ever matter to you, Khai?” He asked.
It was rare that anyone ever called me by my true name. Actually, Nui was the only friend who ever called me by my true name.
And no matter what, it always surprised me when I heard it.
“No matter what anyone says, you always act on your own.”
I shrugged as I walked away. “I guess that means we’re going to be kidnapping a bitch.” I said. “We’ll make the plans at dawn.”
