It rained hard the day Billie was born. As the raindrops clapped over the roof and thunder rumbled in the sky, Brenda was busy screaming her lungs out in the hospital, trying to get Billie out of her. Brenda's father, Robert, wandered up and down the delivery ward, wondering why it was taking so long while also trying to be optimistic...
Brenda was sixteen when she lost her mother. Her mother, Marianne, had been sick on and off over the years and she kept going to the hospital for treatment. Sometimes, she would be admitted and observed for days before she's discharged while other days were mild and only required medications. Before the sickness, Marianne was a chef, she had her small catering shop with few people who worked for her and when her sickness started, she still continued managing the shop with Brenda's help. But it got to a point when she was advised by her doctor to stop working for a while and focus on her recovery. There is only little a sixteen year old girl can handle, Brenda gave all her best but between caring for her mother and managing the shop, she was stretched thin. Eventually she couldn't continue with the shop as the workers slacked in the absence of the boss and it wasn't long before the number of customers started declining till there was none left and the shop had to be closed down.
All of Brenda's attention was now on her mother, but Marianne never got well, she grew worse, slowly fading away each passing day. One fateful morning, Marianne was feeling weak, she didn't take it serious at first, and because she also didn't want to bother Brenda, she kept quiet about it but she couldn't hide it for long as the weakness didn't subside. Brenda noticed she wasn't feeling well and insisted they go to the hospital for a quick checkup. Marianne didn't want to but Brenda wouldn't let it go so she later agreed.
By the time they got to the hospital, Marianne's condition had gotten worse, she was immediately admitted into the intensive care unit. Brenda then called her father to inform him of the state of things but before Robert got to the hospital, Marianne had already passed away, he did not even get to see his wife in her last moment. Brenda was inconsolable, hot tears rolled down her eyes as she held onto her mother's body while calling out to her to wake up. All the doctors and nurses around were moved, even the other patients in the unit felt her pain. Robert was really hurt as well, he wanted to break things and let out the pain but he had to be strong for Brenda, it was the least he could do for Marianne.
Marianne was buried a week after, the church was filled with well wishers who had sweet things to say about her and even afterwards, some of the guests still stayed around to take care of Brenda. One of them was Marianne's younger sister, Melinda, she stayed the longest, while others left that day or the next, Melinda stayed for a week. She helped with the cooking, cleaning and other chores that needed to be done in the house. Brenda hardly ate, while others cried and wailed, she did not, she crawled into her shell instead. It was as if nothing had changed, it all seemed like a bad dream to her and she desperately hoped her mother would would tap and wake her up like she did sometimes in the past but reverse was the case as her world came crumbling down once more when Melinda left a week after. The house became empty and with no one to talk to, the grief she had hidden took over her. She then started her mourning process, Robert did not like seeing her sad and unhappy so he talked to her about going to work with him.
Robert worked as a gardener for a billionaire family. The Davis' family are wealthy and influential family, they own a company called Sapphire. The Davis' also have a mansion where they live, the mansion is just as popular as Sapphire with so many people striving to work there because of it's huge pay. Robert was able to secure a job in the Davis' mansion after trying for years. Getting a job in Sapphire or the Davis' mansion wasn't an easy task, as the job requirements and tests are quite hard. When Robert was finally hired after series of interviews and tests, his family's joy knew no bounds.
Brenda followed her father's advice and started going with him to work. On her first day at work, she caught a glance of Ryan, the Davis' only son and child. The workers called him the golden child, because of the delicate care his parents showered him with. No one dared to mess with him, even if an ant crosses his path without permission, it would be crushed immediately. Ryan was three years older than Brenda, he was nineteen while she was sixteen at the time. Brenda was the first to notice Ryan and she immediately looked away in fear. Her father had told her stories of how workers got punished because they misbehaved with him so she did not want to cause trouble especially for her father. Ryan noticed the scared look on Brenda's face so he smiled and asked her to come to him. Brenda was reluctant at first but she also didn't want to upset him by disobeying him so she quickly went to him.
All the workers around were awed when they saw Ryan laughing heartily with Brenda. Other than his parents and friends, Ryan never talked to any of them, even when he wanted to give orders, he would make signs with his hands. It was then left to the person to decipher what he meant or wanted without making mistakes as he wouldn't repeat himself.
The next day when Brenda and Robert arrived in the premises, Ryan was already in the garden waiting for Brenda. He offered to show her around the mansion and they talked as they moved from one part of the mansion to the other. They spent the next few hours talking and debating over issues. The fear Brenda had the first time was gone by the end of the week, unlike before she could now look him in the eyes while they talk, she had even dropped the honoraries at the request of Ryan. Although, she still used them when she is with other workers.
Brenda was a lovable girl in addition to being an extremely beautiful girl. Everyone enjoyed and craved her presence but they all had different opinions on her friendship with Ryan, the golden child. Some loved her more because of this and wanted to be her friend while hoping perhaps, Ryan would favour them since they are nice to his friend. While some workers, especially the young ladies, hated Brenda for it. How could she just steal their crush away, the fact that she did not even put in an effort like they have being doing made them despise her the more. The rest of the workers were indifferent, they did not care about whatever goes on between the lovebirds.
Brenda did not let her new friendship with the golden child get into her head, she maintained boundaries and continued helping her father in the little way she could. After a year, When Robert saw that Brenda could handle the pressure in the mansion, he once more sat her down about applying for work there. Robert was confident she would be hired effortlessly with Ryan's influence but Brenda opposed the idea of going through Ryan so she started her application without Ryan's knowledge. She applied to the kitchen since she has excellent cooking skills which she learnt from her mother. Brenda would have continued with the shop if not for Marianne's recurring illness and what better way to preserve her mother's memory than showcasing her talent through herself.
Brenda's application was processed in a week and by the end of the second week, she had already gotten her employment letter and working accessories. It was surprising to her but other workers were not, they thought she rode on the influence of Ryan. Before Brenda resumed work on her first day, she informed Ryan of her employment. Ryan was so happy though he still reprimanded her for not asking for his help but deep down, He was more happy that Brenda was not only being friends with him for the benefits like the other people in his life.
Ryan's mother, Evelyn, is one strict woman, she is nice and kind but a no-nonsense woman. Everyone in the mansion feared her even her husband, Ryan's father, Ian. All the work in the mansion is supervised by her which she does effortlessly despite it being tedious. When Brenda was hired, she was placed on probation along with two other people in her category but the kitchen had only one vacancy so only the best would get the job — new workers at the mansion are first given provisional employment and then placed on probation for a month. During this period, they have to report every completed task to Evelyn, who then makes the final decision whether or not they get the job — On their first day at work, they met with Evelyn for the first time. After a brief introduction, she then explained the terms of work to them before tasking them. However, Brenda left an impression on Evelyn with the first task, she paid attention to every little detail. Throughout the month, Brenda also surpassed Evelyn's high expectations and when it was time to choose, Evelyn wasted no time in hiring Brenda. The other two were paid for the month's work and also given recommendations.
Ian handled the family business, he started Sapphire from the scratch and was able to build it to its present state. Ian comes from a wealthy family and also got support from them when he wanted to start his company. His marriage with Evelyn was arranged by their families although, the two have been in a relationship long before their marriage. Shortly after then, Evelyn got pregnant and Ryan came into the picture. After some years, Evelyn and Ian started trying to have more babies but after three miscarriages, they stopped and Evelyn diverted all her love and care on Ryan hence the extreme fragility around him.
Over time, Brenda and Ryan became more close to the extent that, Ryan spends all of his free time with her and even on weekends, when Brenda is not on duty, he would specifically ask for her service, anything just to keep her around. Eventually, Ryan asked Brenda out and they started dating secretly.
One evening, as Brenda was sneaking into Ryan's room as usual, one of the female workers saw them. She goes to her friends and they started gossiping about the lovebirds. They were still at this when Evelyn walked past them, normally, she wouldn't pay attention to their gossip talks as it was a common habit among the workers but she heard her son's name and that was what caught her attention.
"May I ask what is so amusing about my son that the lot of you had to drop whatever you were doing and gossip about him?" Evelyn asked calmly but her face expression said otherwise, any mistake from the gossiping workers would land them in severe trouble so they were mute with their heads bent over in fear.
"You all will be in trouble if I have to repeat myself" Evelyn pressed further still calm but with a fury face. That is the issue with Evelyn, you could get in trouble for speaking to her and you could also get in more trouble if you refuse to speak. They quickly started asking for her forgiveness but Evelyn wouldn't let it slide when it has to do with her golden child.
"I see you do not value your work here, if you refuse to speak this minute, consider your appointment terminated with immediate effect" Evelyn threatened and continued her walk, she knew the threat would work and they would spill like beans.
Evelyn was right, one of the workers quickly jumped in front of her and revealed what the gossip was all about. The others were trying to stop her through signals but she wouldn't listen. She was one of the several ladies who had a crush on Ryan but never got a chance and ever since she knew about his relationship with Brenda, she has been looking for an opportunity to break them up. Everytime she saw them together or heard gists about them from others angers her the more and now an opportunity has surfaced before her, she sure was not going to let it waste. Evelyn's threat made it more easier for her to get at Brenda, she would have reported the gossip regardless, but now, she can make it seem as though she told on Brenda out of fear of losing her job. No one would suspect a foul play, not with the enough witnesses she had around.
Evelyn was filled with anger, how dare Brenda fool around with her son. A gardener's daughter and a maid in her own house wants to steal her way into wealth by dating the golden son. Not while she is alive will she allow such to happen. How could his son even stoop so low to that level? He must have been bewitched by Brenda, there is no length these evil leeches would not go just to get what they want. So many thoughts like these rushed through Evelyn's mind as she made her way to Ryan's room. She flunged the door open and entered, Ryan immediately stood and started complaining about his mother not knocking before coming in and how he doesn't get enough privacy in the house but Evelyn wasn't having any of that, she searched the room and closet frantically for Brenda. She was ready to pounce on her and put her in her place but fortunately for Brenda, she had just left before Evelyn got there. Robert had called for her and she left to answer him, it was on her way back to Ryan that one of the workers told her about what happened so she went back to her post and made herself scarce through the rest of the day.
Evelyn pretended nothing was wrong and gave Ryan an excuse for her behaviour. On the other hand, the news has spread and all the workers have heard about the saga including Robert. When they got back home later in the evening, Robert advised Brenda to forget about a life with Ryan if she desired a peaceful marriage. Brenda reasoned with his father and decided to end it with Ryan the next day.
After Brenda was done with her morning duties, she went to Ryan and made her concerns known but Ryan wouldn't accept, and he begged her to stay instead. Eventually, Brenda agreed with the condition that they would be more careful and Ryan would talk to his parent about accepting their relationship. Meanwhile, Evelyn had made the lady who reported the previous day her spy. The lady was to report to her whenever she sees Brenda with Ryan and she has been on Brenda's tail the moment she resumed duty that morning. Unknown to Brenda, the lady had alerted Evelyn when she saw her go into Ryan's room.
Brenda and Ryan were making out when Evelyn entered the room, they didn't not even notice her presence until she cleared her throat. They quickly adjusted and Brenda wanted to leave but Evelyn stopped her and asked her to sit instead. Evelyn then started by asking Brenda if Ryan ever told her about his betrothal, Brenda was shocked, Ryan never mentioned it to her. Evelyn then told her all about it and how nothing could ever happen between her and Ryan. Brenda was so embarrassed, Ryan had made a fool out of her and made her look desperate. As she left the room, Ryan wanted to go after her, but Evelyn stopped him. Brenda took two weeks leave of absence to sort out herself, which Evelyn gladly agreed to.
By the end of the leave when Brenda resumed at the mansion, Ryan had been engaged to his fiance, Lawanda, and their wedding was being arranged as well. Ryan never got the chance to explain his side of the story as Brenda never allowed him. Brenda had weighed her options and realized she needed the job than a relationship based on lies with no future so when she resumed, she cut all ties with Ryan and squarely faced her job. No matter how much Ryan tried, she never gave him an audience.
Months later, Ryan got married to Lawanda. Brenda has also moved on and in a relationship at the time. Two years later, Brenda got pregnant, it wasn't planned but she was so happy, her boyfriend didn't feel the same way, he wasn't ready for such commitment so he left her. With her boyfriend not ready to take responsibility and Robert retired, Brenda had to work twice as hard to fend for her small family. She started taking food orders outside the mansion and in no time, she had gotten sufficient customers. By the time her pregnancy was starting to showing, she resigned from the mansion and went fully into catering. With the little money she had saved from her years of working in the mansion, she opened a catering shop in her mother's name, Robert also helped in the shop. As the business grew, so did the baby, months after months, until the ninth month when Brenda went into labour...
"Brenda are you okay? Do you need me to get you anything?" Robert asked. He had been noticing the discomfort look on Brenda since they opened in the morning but he thought it was the usual pregnancy mood swings. He was forced to ask when it was afternoon and she was still moody.
Brenda told him everything was fine and there was no cause for alarm. Truthfully, everything remained fine until she went into labour in the middle of the night. It was still mild so she was able to endure till it was morning when they went to the hospital. Six hours have gone by since they arrived and Brenda was still in labour, groaning and screaming at some points. The loud sound of the heavy rain didn't help matters as Robert could not stay still, he kept walking up and down the hallway...
"It's a girl!!!" One of the attending nurses announced to Robert.
