I rushed to get myself ready in the morning and ran out of my room. Still trying to put my shoes on, causing me to hop up and down trying to get them on until I finally succeeded. I was on my way down stairs to get breakfast only to find the staff on panic mode. The chefs were all in over their heads, the maids were scrambling and cleaning everything fast and even the gardener, who had nothing to do other than to look after the property looked like he was way in over his head. For once I actually felt like I was the only sane person in the house. Before I lost track of my thoughts Susan walked past me and I grabbed hold of her arm and she looked pleased to see me. “Susan whats going on and where is everyone going?” She looked stunned that was asking her this question but she quickly replaced her shock with a pleasant smile. “Well its Mr. Richfield's birthday remember I told you that we usually leave the entire house to him… he tends to want it that way” Now it was my turn to be shocked at her words. I know and very well remembered what she said but I simply thought that she was overreacting a bit much. “Susan I thought that you were—” “Overreacting? Yeah I get that a lot especially from the newer staff. But anyway if you need me I’ll be in my quarters packing my things for the day. We’re all probably leaving in two hours time or less” “Okay Susan, I think I have to eat my lunch and tend to Mr. Richfield before—” “Oh don’t bother yourself, he wont be awake till late today. You see every year on his birthday he likes being by himself, it's sort of his break day” “Okay Susan, thanks” Susan walked away from me and joined the rest of the staff in packing away. Throughout my lunch I couldn’t help but feel like something was wrong. I mean it was the mans birthday and everyone was abandoning him including his wife. Why are you so worried about him then? I mentally asked myself, trying to mask how I really felt about this whole situation. I got off from the dinning room chair and I bumped into Maria. “Oh sorry madam Anastasia!” “Its okay Maria. Maria I need a small favor from you” “Oh yes madam “ “I’m going out and I need to you to do me a favor” “But what about Mr. Richfield?” “I promise I’ll be back before you know it” I watched as Maria nodded and immediately I grabbed my bag and made my way of the house, which I haven’t done since I arrived almost a month ago. I didn’t know how I was going to pull this off but I knew that I had to try and it might even backfire on me, but still I was willing to try it. ** I came back to a house that was quiet, almost like a ghost house. I still held the plastic bag that I received from the purchase that I made today. I walked through the house that had always had a great amount of energy, only to find Maria sitting in the kitchen by herself. “Oh Maria sorry for making you wait do long” “Its fine madam Anastasia. I have to leave my grand babies are waiting for me at home” I smiled at the old woman and she kissed me goodbye on my cheeks, she then proceeded to walk away taking her handbag with her. I quickly got into the elevator and made my way to Mr. Richfield room, I knocked onto the door and there was no response at all. My heart rate began to quicken so much that I left the plastic bag in his living room and unlocked the connecting door to his room. Only to find him sitting in his beg backed up by large pillows, just like I left him last night. His eyes were bloodshot red and his body covered in sweat. “Hey sir—” “Where the hell were you the whole morning!?” He yelled at me causing my to jump up a little, because I wasn’t expecting his outburst. He couldn’t move his body but the constant moving of his fingers showed me that he wasn’t too happy. “I’m sorry but I had to get something at the stores real quickly because—” “I don’t care what you had to get at the store, you hear me! Goodness you were hired to do one thing and you can't even do it right. Why do I pay people like you!?” With very word he spoke after that his face reddened with anger and I stood glued to the same spot listening to him tearing me down, just to justify his anger. “Are you done with your speech Mr. Richfield?” I calmly asked him trying to keep my emotions in check. There was no ways I was going to give him the satisfaction that he craved so badly. “How dare you ask me that you—” “Peasant, low life, gold digger , oh and lets not forget lazy too in case you forgot that” “I see little Anastasia has grown wings, I'll be more than happy to clip them right off. Get out and don’t come back, you're fired!” I wont lie it actually did hit me quite hard, after only nearly working here for a month I was being fired. I swallowed the lump in my throat and turned on my heel to walked away from him but fore I could take another step and I turned back to face him. “You now what your problem is, you’re so insecure of yourself that you pick on people like me and try to make us feel like we’re not worth it. Just because we’re not filthy rich like you! You can hide behind your specially designed high gates but you're a lonely man, a bitter man it shows” “How dare you speak to me like that, I’m your boss!” “I’m sorry to burst your bubble but you just fired me about a minuet ago, therefore I can say whatever I want and you cant even call anyone to remove me because you pushed them all away like yo always do… nothing new” I couldn’t take it anymore, telling Mr. Richfield all these things made me feel good. It wasn’t because I wanted to hurt him instead I wanted him to hear the truth from the horses mouth and not from a bunch of 'yes people' that told him exactly what he wanted to hear and when he wanted to hear it. “Look I have put up with you for a whole month and yes you can be overbearing at times, but I honestly believe that you sir are a good man and people don’t get to see that because you hide behind these walls you've built up for yourself. Nobody can climb over or break through it. Look I’m not going to keep you any longer, I know you’ve fired me but I’m not going to leave this house until everyone comes back home” I didn’t know what it was but I felt relieved after what I said to my boss. He didn’t respond to me, all he did was stare at me. I sat onto the couch and played on my phone. “Thank you” I raised my head up and it was Mr. Richfield, with tears running down his eyes and every time he blinked those lonely tears would just pour out even more. “I mean it Anastasia when I say thank you. I don’t know if I’m a good guy but thank you for staying with me. I know I can be a bastard at time but I really appreciate you and I’m sorry for what I said earlier” I was left without a word to say, I guess all that yelling at him rendered me speechless to the point where I couldn’t even construct a sentence. “Well sir—” “Call me Max—please” “Okay. Max I didn’t mean to hurt you it was just that—” “You don’t have to apologize Anastasia. I know what I can be at times and I know how I treat people” He paused for a while, gathering himself but failed because the tears falling from his eyes refused to end. I quickly ran out and got him some tissues, I sat besides him and wiped the tears from his eyes . “Thank you Anastasia. I'm sorry for what I said I didn't mean to fire you, I'm just frustrated really” “Yeah I know you're stressed from work and—” “Its not work! I’m a billionaire that sits and depends on everyone else but himself. I’m stuck in this bed unless you help me, I feel like I’m not even a man!” “But Max” “No Anastasia you don’t get it! My marriage is falling apart because I cant satisfy my wife sexually and its my fault that we don’t even have a child. Whats the use of all this money when you cant even enjoy it to the fullest” I watched as the once ruthless Maximus Richfield break down into uncontrollable sobs and all I could do what comfort him until he calmed down. “Max why don't you celebrate your birthday?” “It reminds me of yet another year where all I can move is my head and fingers and nothing else” It broke my heart at his quick and simple respond. The man had clearly given up on life but I knew how to cheer him. I got up from his bed and made my way to his living room and grabbed the plastic bag that I left there. Pulled out a little chocolate cake and placed a few candles on it and lit and I also grabbed the little gift bag that contained the contents of his gift. I unlocked the door and I began to sing. “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to Max happy birthday to you” The smile on his face brightened my day, it clouded the image of a broken man that did nothing but to sit on his bed and judging the whole world. “You didn’t have to do that Anastasia “ “Yes I did, seeing that no one brought you a birthday cake” He blew out his candle and fed him a piece of his chocolate cake and he loved it. “How did you know that I loved chocolate cake?” “Well who doesn’t like chocolate cake? Oh I got you one more thing” I grabbed the gift bag and I took out of his gift, it was a black t-shirt that had the words ‘The best boss in the world’ written on its front. “You really shouldn’t have but I love it anyways” We laughed for what seemed like hours and he shared things with me that would seem rather personal and not to be shared with the staff. And then it happened again. His eyes locked into my mine and my lips were drawn to him and I kissed him. Hot sensual kisses between the two of us, tongues fighting for dominance enjoying the moistness of each others mouths. I held onto his face. For the fear that he would pull away because I couldn’t stop from wanting Max , we kissed for what seemed like an eternity until we both pulled away gasping for air. “I’m sorry sir” “its okay Ana—” “No its not. I work for you and you're my boss, worst of all you're a married man” “Married by paper, I doubt that Lisa actually loves me!” “Don’t speak ill of your wife sir” “Really?Tell me how many times have you seen my wife spend time with me? Look I’m starting to believe that my wife is married to the lifestyle and not me” A part of what he said was true, Mrs Lisa didn't look like the housewife type and she definitely didn’t look like she could take care of her husband. “Never the less sir you're married and this should never happen again. Your wife must never find out about this okay?” “Okay—” The way he said it scared me cause he said it with a smile and so much confidence and that didn’t sit well with me, but all I knew was that the butterflies in my stomach still danced around while I continued feeding him.
