Watching this girl walk all over my house for the past two days irritated me to the highest level of my irritation. For some weird reason It was too unbearable to handle.
Max's POV
That’s the thing with these peasants, they want everything to come easy for them including an easy pay check.
I wasn’t going to allow them take my hard earned money away from me. For the first time my wife thought I needed a female care giver to teach me to be nicer to people. I didn’t know what Lisa wanted from me really. All these people they mock me every day, they walked around showing off their legs and how they can use all their limbs whilst I was stuck, either in my chair or in my bed screaming to myself on the inside…praying that I don’t lose my sanity pretty soon. All these people were liars and my wife was the only person I could trust.
“Excuse me sir” I heard Anastasia's voice yet again and I must say I was not impressed, for the past two hours she's been looking over her shoulder to make sure I was okay. I turned my chair to face her
“What is it Anastasia?” I asked her making sure that she heard the irritation in my voice.
“Your phone is ringing sir” I nodded at her and she answered the phone and placed it on speaker.
“Hey buddy how are you doing!” my best friend yelled from the other end of the cell phone and I’ve clearly given up telling him to stop asking me about how my day is, because being confined to a wheelchair isn’t what I call fun.
“I’m existing, I guess”
“Okay now that were done with things, do you want the good news or the bad news?”
“Whichever one, Jim spill the beans”
“Good news we’ve just received the Richfield housing project and all the papers have been finalized”
“And the bad news?”
“Well your assistant Jessica is off on maternity leave”
Hearing that made me feel so mad that I literally felt like throwing something…anything but my body once again proved me that I couldn’t do it. Instead of ‘running’ mad and losing it with the rest of my staff I tried to compose myself.
“So can’t you do it for me?”
“I’m afraid I can’t brother, you know I would have if I could, but I have this meeting that I have to attend to over the weekend and it has to be done urgently otherwise I’m screwed”
Some where deep in my mind I knew he was telling the truth, because Jim was my childhood friend, in fact he was more like a brother to me. We grew up together and we did almost everything together and unfortunately my condition has been making it harder for us to hang out a bit.
“Okay its fine, I’ll make a plan” I hung up the phone and turned my electrical wheelchair around only to face Anastasia. I couldn’t help myself but I hated her energy, everything about her seemed happy and bubbly, whilst I had everything in the world yet I wasn’t satisfied.
She was focused on the fish tank and watching the fishes every little move as if she was being hypnotized by the fish.
“You cannot possibly tell me that you’ve never had a fish tank in your home as a kid?”
I asked her causing her to startle, drawing her attention away from the fish tank and back to me. She played with her hands and a smile appeared on her face casing the muscles in my face to flinch a bit.
“Well that neighbor used to—”
“Enough! That was a rhetorical question by the way, not that you would know that. Do you have any secretarial skills?”
“Well I’ve—”
“It’s a yes or a no, answer me Macy”
“It’s Anastasia sir”
Her correcting me made me even more mad, it’s bad enough that I was confined to a chair for possibly the rest of my life, now I was faced with a low life reminding me of how far my mind has withered away.
“Look my secretary is on her maternity leave and I need you to sort out some documents for me. They are all in my office, probably in my draw”
She nodded her head and left the lounge area, leaving me alone just how I liked it. That’s what it seemed these days everyone liked leaving me alone, poor old Maximus Richfield that everyone pitied. I occupied myself by facing my lush green garden filled with dark red roses but even that couldn’t make me happy.
I had someone specially plant those roses for my wife… who rarely spends time looking at them, well she does seem to be jetting around the world enjoying herself.
“ Sir here are your documents” I turned my chair around to face Anastasia, who held a pile of documents in her hands.
For what seemed like hours Anastasia and I worked through the documents and sorted the deals that needed finalizing. Anastasia began to yawn but she was trying to hide it, she did a couple of more yawns and I think it was time that we took a break for the day.
“I think we should take a break now”
She quickly stood up from the floor where she was seated quietly on the carpet.
“But we’re not done sir”
“I know that, we’ll continue it tomorrow”
She tried to argue with me but from the few hours she’s spent at the mansion, I guess she knew the drill. No one argues with me.
“Okay Mr. Maximus I’ll get your lunch ready then and then—”
Just then my wife entered the lounge areas carrying designer bags and wearing her best.
“Hello everyone did you all miss me?”
I didn’t smile at all, so Lisa came around to me and kissed me on my lips and her breath stank of alcohol causing me to move my face away.
“Mrs. Lisa welcome back ma’am”
Anastasia greeted my wife with all the excitement in the world, how one woman could have that much happiness inside her really baffled me.
“Anastasia could you please leave my wife and myself to have a little chat”
Anastasia did as she was told and before I knew it she disappeared away from my eyes view. Lisa slumped onto the chair and focused her attention on me.
“What?” she asked me as if she didn’t know what the matter was.
“You’re seriously asking me what? Lisa how about the fact that you left your husband all alone—”
“Oh please Max can you stop overreacting for a minute. I only went away for like two days and you weren’t alone, you were surrounded by the gardeners, house helps, drivers and even better your own personal nurse who is at your beck and call whenever you need her to”
“But that’s not the same! I just want you here with me and supporting me through this terrible times that I’m facing” I wanted to stand up from my electronic wheelchair but I couldn’t but once again I felt so helpless.
“What do you actually want from me Max?”
My wife stood up from her chair and now she was looking down at me with rage in her eyes and her one hand on her hip, which obviously meant bad news for me. I quickly remembered what my therapist said about taking deep breaths.
“I just want you to be here for me”
“Max I’m young and I need to live my life, I’ve been doing this for the past five years and I can’t be wasting my time taking care of you when you can’t even take care of me”
“Haha sweet heart, let I remind you that I do take care of you. All those trips around the world the world in private jets, the designer cloths you wear before it hits the runway, the unlimited credit cards, the cars the—I bet your dad can’t give you any of that can he?”
I taunted her and I could see it hit a nerve or two. Lisa walked towards me and bent over so that she could look at me eye to eye.
“I am a heiress—”
“Of a fallen empire and if I remember clearly, so much that I’m still bailing your dad… let’s hope he stopped gambling all together”
“Yeah you’re right Max dad is gambler and the family name isn’t what it used to be but you know what?”
“What?” I taunted her even further.
“When I said that you’d don’t take care of me, I didn’t mean financially I meant what you lack doing in between the sheets”.
With what Lisa said she left me and walked away, leaving me alone. I couldn’t help it but there was truth to what she said. I couldn’t make her happy even with all the money in the world I couldn’t please her … how long before she finally leaves me?.
