Chapter Sixteen
Faelen’s POV
After the man who had introduced himself as Caleb left, I just stood there, frozen in place, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
Caleb, the pack’s Beta, Hunter’s right-hand man, had actually apologized for the way Hunter had treated me.
It didn’t make any sense to me at all. These men were supposed to be the strongest, the most ruthless, and here he was, showing kindness?
No, it had to be a test, a way to see if I’d let my guard down and disrespect the Alpha. I finished cleaning the dining room, pushing thoughts of Caleb and Hunter out of my mind.
I had to stay focused. My mission was all that mattered to me. Whatever Hunter did to me, however he humiliates me, it’s nothing compared to the success of my mission.
I would make my Alpha proud. I had to.
I wiped away the tears that had started to trickle down my cheeks. This wasn’t the time for weakness. I shouldn’t be stupid enough to get distracted by a few kind words from Caleb.
Hunter’s cruelty, Caleb’s apparent concern… which I felt was a test. They were all distractions from what I was really here to do.
I reminded myself under my breath, trying to convince myself that all he sees me as is a lowly servant. That’s all I was to him, to all of them.
I shouldn’t allow myself think it was anything more than that.
When I headed back to the kitchen, the head maid was waiting for me there. The woman’s face was stern as always, though not in an unkind manner.
“Faelen,” she called to me, “You’re to go with Anya to take these books to Alpha Hunter’s office,” she instructed.
For the first time in what felt like forever, a small feeling of joy lit up inside me. It was strange, but I knew this was my chance… my real opportunity to find something useful.
Where better to get the pack’s secrets and most useful information than the Alpha’s private office itself. Hunter’s main domain.
The head maid’s words barely sank in my head as I nodded and took the stack of books she pointed to me.
Anya met me at the door, the girl’s usual warm smile in place. “Ready?” she asked, taking a few of the books from the stack.
I nodded, forcing a small smile of my own. “Yes, let’s go.”
We walked in silence through the corridors of the estate, the weight of the books was nothing compared to the weight of what I was about to do.
Anya chatted away about the day and all she’d been through, about other maids, but I barely heard her. My mind was uneasy, thinking, planning.
I had to find something, anything that would aid my pack. When we reached Hunter’s office, I took a deep breath. The door stood in front of us, a way to what could be treasures of information.
I hesitated for a moment, but then pushed the door open. The office was just as intimidating as I remembered Hunter’s room was… large, with dark wooden furniture and heavy curtains that made the room a little dark.
Anya set her stack of books down on the desk and turned to me. “I’ll go get the rest . You can start putting these on the shelves.” She smiled, unaware of the fear inside me, and then left.
As soon as she was gone, I sprang into action. I quickly placed the books on the shelves, then turned my attention to the desk. It was neat, almost too neat, with everything in its place.
I carefully opened the drawers, trying not to make any sound. Most of it was just papers, invoices, and reports… nothing useful… to me at least.
I was starting to lose hope when I found a small, locked drawer on another desk. My heart pounded as I examined it. There had to be something important inside, but I had no way to open it… it was locked.
Frustrated, I glanced around the room, my mind racing. I couldn’t leave without something, anything. But then I heard footsteps in the hallway… Anya was coming back.
I quickly closed the drawer and straightened up, grabbing a few books to place on the shelves. Just as I had finished, Anya walked in, carrying another stack of books.
“All done?” she asked, setting the books down.
“Yes,” I replied, trying to keep my voice normal. “Just finishing up.”
Anya was a quiet, jovial girl who I hadn’t had much interaction with before, I could tell she was a plenty talker, but she seemed nice generally.
She gave me a small, polite smile as she placed the rest of the stacks on the shelves too.
“Okay, that’s it,” Anya said as we both finished.
“Yeah.” I answered, my mind spinning with thoughts on what next to do.
Anya had turned and already started to leave, so I quickly followed, my mind racing with possibilities. The head maid had said nothing to me about coming back immediately, so this was my opportunity.
“Anya,” I called out softly, catching her attention just before she left the room. “I think the head maid wanted me to stay behind and tidy up a bit here.” It was a lie, but it was the only way I could get the chance to search the room alone.
Anya looked at me for a moment, clearly puzzled. “Oh, she did? I thought we were done here.”
“Yes we are,” I said, nodding, trying to sound confident. “This is just me. It won’t take long.”
She hesitated, then shrugged. “Alright then.” With that, she left, closing the door behind her.
I stood there for a moment, listening to her footsteps fade down the hall. Then I turned back to the office, taking a deep breath.
I had to be quick, smart. Hunter could return at any moment, and if I was caught… I pushed the thought away and hurried over to the desk.
My hands trembled slightly as I began sifting through the papers. Most of it was confusing to me, but I continued searching, looking for something.
As I shuffled through the papers on Hunter’s desk, my eyes fell on a letter. The seal was broken, and the grease seemed new, as if it had been read just once and tossed aside.
I hesitated for a moment, then picked it up, carefully unfolding it to read its contents. My breath caught in my throat as I read through the words.
The letter was from a neighboring pack, warning Hunter about activities at the border. It seemed that whatever Hunter and his men were up to was starting to slip into their lands, and they were not happy about it.
The letter was clear… if the trespassing didn’t stop, there would be consequences. My heart pounded as I read the letter again, trying to memorize as much as I could.
This was something… something big. If I could find out what exactly Hunter’s men are doing at the border, it could be crucial information for my pack.
Alpha Zodd would need to know this. It could change everything.
I was so engrossed in the letter that I almost didn’t hear the footsteps approaching. Panic immediately rushed through me, and I quickly refolded the letter, placing it exactly where I’d found it.
I tried to calm my beating heart as I turned to leave the office, hoping that whoever was coming wouldn’t notice anything wrong.
As I slipped out of the door, I collided with someone, almost losing my balance. I looked up, startled, and found myself face to face with Caleb.
His expression was both of surprise and curiosity as he steadied me for a moment .“Faelen?” he asked, his voice carrying that same tone of concern. “What are you doing here?”
My mind raced for an excuse. “I… I was sent here,” I blurted out, trying to sound calm. “She needed some books delivered here.” I gestured towards the office, hoping he wouldn’t ask too many questions.
Caleb’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t press the issue. “I see,” he said slowly. He still seemed nice, almost too nice, which only made me more uncomfortable.
There was no way the Beta of the pack could genuinely care about someone like me. He was probably just being polite, or worse, testing me.
“I should go,” I said quickly, avoiding his gaze as I sidestepped him.
The sooner I got away from Caleb, the better. His kindness was disturbing, and I couldn’t afford to let my guard down.
Caleb nodded, stepping aside to let me pass. “Of course,” he said, his tone gentle. “Take care, Faelen.”
I barely acknowledged his words as I hurried down the corridor, my heart still racing. It felt like my skin was crawling with nerves.
Every muscle in my body tense as I put more distance between us. Not just because of Caleb, but because of how close I had come to being caught. It was a scare.
Still, I was glad that I’d found something. Now I just had to find a way to get the information out of here without raising suspicions,.
As I walked away fast through the hallways, I couldn’t help but glance back. The thought of that locked drawer haunted me. I knew there was something there, something really important.
Whatever it would take, I would find a way to succeed. Even if it meant enduring more of Hunter’s cruelty, or maybe even stop keeping the distance between Caleb and I, who I still wasn’t sure I could trust though.
