Sorrow brings a new beginning

1752 Words
BRIER I woke with a start to the deafening sound of the alarms and sirens, the emergency lights blinded me. As my eyes start to adjust, my mother barges into my room screaming for me to get up, “BRIER, WE HAVE TO GET TO THE BUNKER NOW!” I leaped from my bed and grabbed my emergency go bag from under my bed, all pack members have a bag ready in case of attack, it has some medical supplies, a change of clothes, some bottles of water and emergency ration packs. The bags can ensure we can survive a few days in the bunker. We ran downstairs to see my father flying out of his office, "Rogues are attacking from the North and East, they have broken through the borders like the forest and our warriors are nothing, they must be working with witches to be able to break through the enchantments so easily. I have put out a call for help to our friends and allies.” He handed my mother his phone, “I have transferred control of the pack systems to my phone, I am leaving my two brave girls in charge, get to the bunker and keep each other safe. I love you both, and I will see you soon.” He touched both of our cheeks and ran out the door, he shifts into his huge black wolf and disappears into the night. My mother puts dad’s phone in my backpack and grabs my hand. We ran towards the closest bunker. There were explosions coming from the direction my dad had run. The sound of fighting is getting closer, “Mum, I am scared”, I cried out, “Just keep running, baby. We will be okay if we can get to the bunker. Help is coming.” I ran as fast as I could but I was thrown to the ground by a huge explosion. My ears are ringing. I looked around for my mum and found her lying face down on the ground. I felt a sharp pain in my chest and a snap as if a band had snapped in my heart. I try to crawl to her, but people are banging into me as they try to run to safety. I am grabbed from behind and scream until a soothing frail voice whispers in my ear “it’s okay little Moon. I have got you, I will keep you safe”. I turned to see our pack, Oracle. She grabs my hand and barrels her way through the scared pack members and drags me towards the forest at our south border. I am surprised by how strong she is. She must be at least a hundred years old, and always appears quite frail, but I cannot break free from her tight grasp on my wrist. “Stop! Please, we have to help my mum,” she stops and touches my cheek, “I am so sorry my child, I promise you will see the Luna again. Just not in this life, we must get you to safety, they cannot take you from us. Your role in what is coming is too important,”. With that, she grabs my hand again and continues to the forest. I look back in the direction of the bunker just as another explosion hits the building, the screams are deafening, and the oracle pulls me even harder, “run child, NOW!!!!” We run deeper and deeper into the forest, the sound of screaming gets quieter and quieter, the trees move around us, creating a path for us and moving behind us to block us from danger. We run for what seems like hours, when I feel another snap in my chest. I fall to my knees and cry out at the emptiness in my heart and I know that my father is gone. Tears run down my cheeks, but I feel numb, my whole world has crashed down around me. The oracle kneels in front of me and grasps my chin in her hand, forcing me to look into her deep purple eyes, “I am sorry little moon, but we have no time to grieve now. You are a Nixon. The blood that flows through your veins carries the strength of our people and our ancestors. Let their strength carry you on, we cannot stop. We must get you to safety.” We keep running, I feel like my chest will explode if I don’t stop soon to rest, the oracle finally stops, and we lean against one of the trees, I take a bottle of water from my pack and offer it to the oracle, she gratefully takes it and takes small sips, before passing the bottle back to me. I took out my dad's phone and unlocked it. I stifle a whimper when I see the picture he has of the three of us on his Home Screen. I see the SOS app blinking and tap to open it. There are messages from our allied packs that help is on its way. Dad sent the SOS at just after 3am, it is now 6:30. Our closest Ally is the Winter Falls pack. They are about 2 hours away in wolf form, so they should have arrived by now. I notice a second SOS from the fae town. They have been attacked as well by witches. What the fu.ck is going on? The last message is from Alpha Roman, 4:15am. We are still 4 hours away from you by car. Xavier and our warriors have shifted and should get to you in half that. Please stay safe my friend, we are coming. Xavier and his warriors should be arriving soon, goddess. I hope they are not too late. I turn to the oracle, and I was about to tell her we should start to head back, as help had arrived, when we heard low growls to our left, I saw four filthy wolves staring at us with their horrible red eyes. The Oracle jumps to her feet, “run Brier, the forest will show you the way, I will hold them off”. I was about to argue when she looked at me, her eyes had turned to a swirling silver, “I SAID RUNNNNN!” So I ran. The trees made a path for me. I think I am heading to the East border of our pack. I heard a low growl beside me and turned to see a huge brown wolf. I swear he grinned at me before he leaped towards me, knocking me to the ground. I screamed in terror as he pins me down with a huge bloodstained paw on my chest, he snarls low in his chest and I close my eyes, waiting to feel his sharp teeth rip into me. I lay there waiting to join my parents in the goddess's kingdom when I heard a deafening ROAR , the weight on my chest was gone, and I heard growling and the sound of fighting. I slowly opened my eyes and saw the most beautiful white wolf. His fur tipped with hints of blue, his fur shimmers as he moves, just like fresh snow in the moonlight. He is also HUGE, towering over the brown rogue. He lunges for the rogue's neck and with one swipe of his elongated claws, rips the rogue's head clean from his body. I let out a shuddering gasp and the beautiful but deadly white wolf turns toward me, he growls lowly in his chest and freezes, he is staring at me with a confused look in his eyes. Was that fear look in his eyes? Oh those eyes, they are a bright aqua blue, like looking into the most beautiful ocean. He takes a tentative step towards me and I reach out my hand to him. “Hello beautiful, my name is Brier Nixon. Thank you for saving me, but the oracle is in trouble. Can you help me save her?” He nods his giant head and I head back to where I had left the oracle. As we walked, I filled him in on everything I knew, which was not much. "The attack happened so fast. Dad thought they must have magical help because they just ripped through all the enchantments and our warriors were like they were nothing. They were at the pack house almost before we got out the door. There were huge explosions coming from everywhere. I have no clue how many are dead. All I know for sure is that Alpha and Luna are dead. I felt our bond break as they passed." We are just moving past a huge oak tree when I see the oracle walking towards us without a scratch on her, jeez the old hag is not as weak and frail as she makes out!! She grins at me like she has just read my thoughts and chuckles. “I may be old but I can still kick the as.s of a couple of useless rogues. I see you and the young Alpha have found each other. Let’s get him some clothes. I think it is safe to shift back now.” She reaches into a knot in the tree next to her and pulls out a freshly laundered pair of sweatpants and a black t-shirt. The wolf looks at her in surprise and she chuckles again. "The forest will always provide if we ask." He rolls his eyes at her and takes the clothes in his mouth and disappears behind a tree. We hear the sound of his bones breaking as he shifts back. A few minutes later, he walked from behind the tree. My breath sticks in my throat and my jaw hits the forest floor. HOLY FU.CK AND THANK YOU GODDESS FOR THIS TOWERING KING OF WET DREAMS!!!! He must be at least 6’6” tall, the black t-shirt cannot hide a chest that looks like it is made of marble, his wavy blond hair is fashionably a little long, making me want to run my fingers through it. He stares straight at me and I sweat. His piercing blue eyes can see right into my soul, I can feel my drawl escaping my mouth and slam it shut before I embarrass myself anymore, his mouth turns up in an arrogant, knowing smirk, uhhh fu.ck my life “Xander?” I ask with a sigh.
