The door slammed shut, leaving me alone in the dimly lit room with the two men from earlier and the woman Maximo had come in with. My heart rate picked up in fear and panic as I rushed to the door, pounding on it with my fists. “Let me out! Maximo! Maximo!!!!! Let me out of here! This is illegal, Maximo! You can't keep me here, do you hear me?! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT! GET ME OUT OF HERE!”
But silence greeted me, and I knew without a doubt that he had walked away, leaving me all alone to my fate.
Anger and fear swept through me as I took a deep, shaky breath, leaning against the door even as a fresh set of tears started to form in my eyes.
