“Surprise!”
I didn’t know what was happening. I turned my head to see who arrived but Jace was blocking my view. My muscles tensed a bit, so I took a few deep breaths and cleared my mind of negative thoughts.
I turned back and focused my attention on the small flower arrangement on the table. I didn’t want the family to see me being nosy.
“What are you doing here? We thought you wouldn’t come,” Jace asked with obvious irritation in his voice.
“I wanted it to be a surprise. Happy birthday, Mom.”
