Chapter 6: Up And Leave

1046 Words
Ellie was yet again taken back to the federal bureau of investigation after the whole incident at her apartment as she found herself quietly staring at the busy detectives moving around in urgency. Her apartment was now being treated as a crime scene and was sealed. Somehow that killer had managed to escape yet again before the police could get to him. Ellie was still pretty shaken up after the whole thing. It had come to her knowledge that the officer standing guard outside her door was stabbed to death and officer Lilly when Ellie had asked for an update on her she was told that she had hit her head pretty hard against the wall when she was pushed which caused swelling in part of her brain so she was in surgery. Ellie prayed hard for officer Lilly to be okay. "This is bad. That son of a b***h killed one of my officers and severely injured the other, I'll have to answer for this" the detective superintendent, Stella said, talking more to herself than anyone. Ellie didn't say anything, she was still shaking from the events that transpired before.  There was a serial killer in her apartment who murdered a police officer there and injured another in an attempt on her life. Ellie didn't think she could ever feel safe in that apartment again or anywhere for that matter. Ellie hugged her legs closer to her chest in an attempt to offer herself some solace. She had even run out of tears to cry. "Oh sweetheart, I know this is hard and trust me I didn't mean for this to happen, this was exactly the thing we were trying to avoid but it didn't work, he is clever. That's why I am placing you under our advanced witness protection, I am sorry but you can't go back to your apartment as you know it's a crime scene now and also because you're going to have to leave the state as I am placing you in a safe house outside our state, in California" Stella broke the news to her, immediately catching her attention as she looked at the superintendent wide eyed. "W..what when?" Ellie asked, shocked. "Today, I will arrange our private plane for you at midnight" Stella answered. "No, I can't just up and leave. I have responsibilities, job, bills, mortgage, friends, family. How long are we even talking about here?" Ellie asked, exasperated. "I understand but you see, after today's events we know that Mariano is out to get you and he'll go to whatever heights he needs to do that so if he succeeds then none of that stuff you mentioned would matter anyways so our first priority is to keep you safe, you will be our key witness to give statement in the court as well when we catch the rat bastard" Stella replied. Ellie knew that the detective was right, but it didn't mean she was completely down with the idea, however, she didn't seem to have much of a choice now. "Well, I need to inform my mom at least and my friends of this whole ordeal and I would need to pick up a few things from my apartment as well if I am gonna be leaving that state and move to Cali for who knows how long" Ellie said. She could see her career tanking. "Well, don't worry about that we'll inform them in our own way and we'll do our best to find him as soon as possible, we have got our best resources on him already and as for your stuff, I'll get one of the lady officers to pack you a suit case from your closet, you can let her know whatever else you need from your apartment but you need to stay here in the mean time" Stella was firm about her instructions leaving Ellie little choice but nod. "Alright then since that's settled, I'll see you before you leave for your flight, there a few things that you need, I'll hand them to you later" Stella said and got up with a comforting hand on her shoulder before leaving Ellie to gather her thoughts. "Thanks Rose" Ellie said taking the suit case that detective Rose had went and personally packed for Ellie with things she needed and a wad of cash that Ellie had in her apartment, hidden in an underside of a lamp. "Oh don't worry about it, just take care of yourself and return back alive" Rose said with a tight lipped smile. "Okay, so here is your ID, from now on you're Amelia Maslow from Kentucky if anyone asks why'd you move tell them you lost your job and needed a change of scenery, in any case, whatever you say, do not and I repeat do not tell anyone your real identity, understood?" Detective Stella said handing her a fake ID and passport. Great, now she was Amelia Maslow. "Alright" what else was she even suppose to say. "Okay good, now when you land, a man named Beau Bennet will meet you there and take you to the safe house. Take care, we'll try to handle matters here as soon as possible to get you back home" Stella gave Ellie a polite smile which she returned before getting into the awaiting police car that take her to the private jet waiting for her. Ellie got out of the car while the officer took care of her luggage. Her mouth hung open at the black, state property jet waiting for her, only her. She kind of felt like royalty. Ellie headed up the stairs and the hostess greeted her before showing Ellie to the seat. The interior was pretty lavish to with the faun color theme and velvet seats. The hostess brought out some water for Ellie on her request since Ellie now sat and could actually relax for a bit, she hadn't realized how thirsty she was. Soon enough, the pilot was instructing to fasten their seatbelts, they were about to take off. Ellie leaned back in her seat and heaved a long sigh. She was gonna start her life in California as Amelia Maslow. She couldn't believe it, it still felt like some sort of twisted dream.
