Book 1: Chapter 1

Book 1~ The Emerald Wolf:

The Emerald Wolf is how Serafina lived in the wolf kingdom of Alavan. She is raised by the Mayer family which has served as the protector of the royal family. Being only a few years younger than the crown prince of wolves, Andrew, she becomes his royal bodyguard and best friend. Serafina grows to be loving and kind, but when strange things start to happen to her, she starts to doubt herself and fears becoming a monster. She is also fighting with herself as she finds herself falling for her best friend.

Narrator’s Notes: Most humans in this story aged and develop at a normal rate, but special humans will mature and develop at the same rate as shifters, even if they seem young in terms of actual age. Their minds and bodies were much more mature like a true shifter’s mind and body would. All humans in this story can also mind link like shifters can.

Year 1

Roland’s POV

Tom and I were hanging up some decorations in the great hall of the castle. Our little Serafina was turning 1 today and my love and the queen were both gushing over celebrating together. “Roland, how are things going?” Julius asks me as he walks in with a four year old Andrew walking next to him. Kane began to whimper in my head. Tom chuckled as I grumbled to myself.

Julius looks at me like he asked something horribly wrong. “It has been rough for Roland. Anytime he tries to hold Serafina she cries. He thinks she hates him.” “I swear she does. She doesn’t cry when anyone else is holding her, and Kane has turned into a whimpering puppy over her.” I said a little fuming.

“I think we just found your problem, Roland.” Julius says. I tilt my head. “My problem? It is not with me. It is the young pup that’s that problem.” I snapped. Then Andrew starts to whimper as he hides behind his father’s leg. ‘Great, now the prince doesn’t like me either.’ I think to myself. “Roland, you have always had to be tougher than most warriors in Avalan, but special young pups are sensitive to those around them. You have to open up and let Serafina know you love her and protect her as a real father would.” Julius says.

Before I can say anything to him, Queen Emeline and Maria walk in with Serafina. Tom walks over to Maria and takes Serafina into his arms. “Hey, there little sprout. How are you doing today?” he talks to her in a silly voice and she giggles and grabs his nose in her tiny little hand.

I love the sound of her giggling and so does Kane. He always perks right up when he hears her. To Kane and I, Serafina is our daughter. Blood or not. We just feel that she is always scared of us.

Queen Emeline smiles as Andrew sits on the floor and lifts his arms up toward Serafina. Tom chuckles as he sets Serafina on Andrew’s lap. Since shifters mature a bit faster than most humans, even though humans can mature quickly, Serafina can sit up on her own, despite being only a year old.

Andrew holds Serafina close to him and they both giggle. They have become almost inseparable over the last year. Anytime we have to separate them, they both whine for a good hour before they settle down. “Oh I was right. They look like they are going to be the best of friends.” Queen Emeline squeals causing Julius to laugh and pull her towards him.

Maria walks over to me. ‘I know what you're thinking, my love. Don’t worry so much. Serafina loves you.’ She says through our mind link. ‘I know you keep saying that dear, but she screams every time I touch her.’ I grumble back. Maria strokes my arm. ‘Have you let her see Kane?’ I shook my head. Kane was huge. Even he was worried that he would accidentally hurt her. ‘See baby. You need to let her know both sides of you. She is very perceptive, she can feel Kane but has never seen him. The unknown is always scary for everyone.’ she tells me.

Before I can say any more, I hear Emeline gasp. I snap my head in the direction she is looking and see that Serafina is trying to stand up. She is using Julius’s leg to lift herself off the floor. He stands perfectly still but holds his hands near her in case she hurts herself. I felt jealous and Kane snarled and growled in my head. Serafina looked over at me with her big green eyes and fell right back down on her butt. “Aww, she was so close.” Julius laughed. I was annoyed. Serafina started to whimper and Maria rushed to her side.

Maria scoops her up and gently bounces her around. I quietly leave and dash outside to the tree line. I strip and shift into Kane. He was big, with black fur on the body, but grey fur on his paws and the tip of his tail. We run around for a while until I get a mind link from Maria. ‘Hey, can you please come back to the castle and watch Serafina? Tom, Julius, Emeline, Andrew, and I are going to the village to get her birthday gifts.’ I groaned but Kane and I were whipped. We couldn’t refuse our mate or leave our pup unsupervised. ‘On my way. I will head to the west gardens.’ I replied as Kane ran back.

We step out of the trees and see Serafina playing with some flowers. I keep my distance and let Kane watch her from here. ‘I wish she wasn’t afraid of us.’ he whimpered. ‘I know. Maybe once she is older and more understanding she will laugh with us as she does with Julius and Tom.’ I replied back to him. Even though I was very hesitant about Maria keeping Serafina last year, Kane was already wrapped around that little girl's finger. Hell, so was I. We were scary protective over our sweet little pup. I just wish she knew that.

I was pulled from my thoughts when I heard a blood curdling scream. Kane snapped his head towards the sound and we both saw red. A f*****g demon had somehow masked its scent and was holding my little one upside down with its fangs extended. ‘WHAT IN THE HELL!?’ Kane and I roared.

Kane dashed to the demon and quickly as a flash swiped the demon in the face with his massive paw. The filthy creature dropped my little one and before she could fall on her head… Kane quickly grabbed her by her little onesie in his mouth. He gently set her down on the ground and turned towards the bleeding demon.

The demon staggers as it stands up. It hisses at Kane and he growls back. He charged at the demon. It swiped at his face, but Kane ducked his head and shot up straight for the neck. He bit down hard and shook his head violently until the thing was no longer moving. Kane tossed it as far as it would go, away from Serafina. We heard her crying and turned back to her, not even thinking of shifting back to human form. Kane walked up to her and gently nudged her with his nose.

Serafina stopped crying and looked up at me with those big beautiful green eyes of hers. She grabbed a hold of Kane’s nose, and that was when I realized we were still in wolf form. I thought she would cry again, but she giggled. Kane’s tail started to wag. He laid down next to her and purred. She giggled some more. “Pop” she muttered. Kane’s ears perked up. Serafina was trying to talk. Kane gently pulls back and we shift back to human form. I grab some shorts that were sitting on a nearby chair and kneel down at Serafina’s level. “What were you saying little one?” I ask in a gentle tone.

She reached her arms up toward me and I happily scooped her up. “Pop pop.” she giggled out. I feel my heart become full. It may not have been perfect, but she said it. She said Papa. She called ME Papa. I was grinning like an i***t when everyone came out to the garden to grab the birthday girl. Maria walks over to a giggling Serafina in my arms as I pretend to eat her stomach and blow raspberries on her neck and stomach. When Tom came over and swiped her from me, Serafina turned to me and said it again.

“Pop pop” as she reached for me. Everyone goes still. “Oh, her first words and she called you Roland.” Emeline said with tears in her eyes. “Now I know how Julius felt when Andrew said mama for his first word.” Maria joked while pretending to be offended. I laughed as I took Serafina back from Tom. I placed my forehead on hers “My little one.” I said while looking into my daughter’s beautiful green eyes. Serafina giggled again and placed her tiny hands on my cheeks. “Pop pop.” I chuckled and Kane purred.

“See honey, showing her Kane really did help, didn’t it?” Maria asked. “Oh, and how do you know I showed her Kane?” I asked back. My mate raised an eyebrow at me. “I can smell the blood of a dead demon in the forest and you are only wearing shorts. Need I say more?” I laughed, “Ok ok, you were right, my love.” Kane and I were both happy that Serafina truly loved us both. We would both be there to protect her no matter what came her way.
