20 I fumble with my key in the lock as I try to open my front door. My hands are numb with the cold and my body is still trembling from the adrenaline surge a few moments ago. Finally, I get the door open and I step inside, feeling the instant enveloping warmth of the central heating. I kick my shoes off and make my way through to the kitchen, where I left Gavin Armitage’s business card, pinned to the fridge by a magnet I bought on a weekend away with Kieran. As soon as I step into the kitchen, something feels wrong. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I get the sense that my mind is telling me things might not be quite as they seem. Almost as if it’s preparing me for the inevitable; something it already knows is about to happen. My heart catches in my throat as I look at the fridge
