“Did you write them down?”
“Write what down?”
“Instructions for the project.”
Fae gives me a look that shows me she’s this close to going all out on me, eyes wide. “Please tell me you’re joking.”
I give her a laugh. “I am. Relax.”
“You know what, Kaye? There’ll be a day I’ll end up smacking you in public.”
“Oh really now?” The bell rang almost two minutes ago. Chairs grazing the floor echoes throughout the room as students flee the classroom. Most of them at least.
“You know, if you need a tour, I could definitely show you around.”
A glance at Cai’s desk reveals a bunch of girls circling him. When Fae’s sees him too, she lets out a sigh and says. “Lucky bastard. One day in and he’s already got everyone swooning over him.” And she isn’t lying. The nearby department must have heard about him. Which explains why there’s a crowd trying to catch a glimpse of his face from the outside.
“I can’t blame them hough. He’s an eye candy.”
“You’re only saying that because guy’s got piercings.” Fae begins packing her books before throwing her back over her shoulder. “He’s no different from the people roaming outside, Kaye."
“I know. There’s just something about him that I can’t quite get.”
“You still think you’ve seen him before?”
I curl my lips. “He seems familiar.”
“Then why don’t you just approach him and shoot your shot. Who knows? Maybe he remembers you from somewhere.”
“With that crowd?” Pointing a finger, I shiver from just the mere thought of approaching him. “It’s not important anyway. Should we stop by the convenience store on our way home?”
“Let’s. Im craving for some noodles.”
Mischievousness glinting my eyes, I open up my mouth to say something but she beats me with a firm warning.
“c***k up a dirty joke and I won’t hesitate to fight you.”
I curl my lips in disappointment. “You’re no fun.”
As we head to the exit, we fail to notice a pair of eyes watching us leave.
We reach the convenience store ten minutes later and make a beeline to the instant noodles section. Fae grabs a can of coke and a sandwich before heading to the cashier. After paying for our snacks, we head to those little tables they have beside the window walls.
We set the cup of noodles aside to let them set, taking a sit on the stools. Fae unwraps her sandwich and takes a bite down only to end up choking.
Giving her a ridiculous face, I push a drink towards her with a finger and she quickly gulps down on it.
“I get that you’re hungry but you should slow down. The sandwich isn’t going anyway.”
Fae smacks her chest before grabbing my shoulder, angling me to stare at the isle of snacks. I end up nearly choking on my sandwich too.
“It’s him.” She whisper shrieks, to which I send her another perplexed look, swallowing.
“Who?”
Using the tip of her finger, she pushes my chin to face the same direction again. “The new kid.”
Oh.
I see him now.
“What should we do?”
“What do you mean ‘what should we do’?” I pull away from her grasp to take a bite from my sandwich. Fae barely breaks her stare from the new kid as she says.
“Should we say hi?”
“Are you crazy?” Since my mouth’s full, my words come out muffled. Fae turns to me with a look of slight disgust. She doesn’t like it when I talk with my mouth full.
“He’s human. What’s the worse that can happen? And besides, I’m curious if the rumors are real.”
My eyes widens when she slides off her stool to approach him. To avoid choking on my own, I refrain from talking with my mouth full. But that doesn’t stop me from letting out muffled hums of warning. She doesn’t listen and soon enough, she’s tapping his shoulder.
Cai turns around. I can’t hear what she’s saying from all the way here. Swallowing, I quickly turn around and mind my own business. Unlike Fae, I feel like he’s the kind to give everyone a cold shoulder.
“This is, Kaye. She’s in the same classroom as us.”
What. The. Heck?
Fae pinches me on the side, indicating that I turn around. I force myself to do so only to find Cai standing there beside Fae. She brought him over.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Cai.” Clamping a drink between his arm, he extends a hand for a handshake. Under Fae’s firm stare, I have no choice but to return one.
“Kaye.” I say, showing a little smile. Surprisingly, he shows me one too.
I guess I was wrong?
Now that he’s smiling, he doesn’t look so scary anymore.
“Hey, do you maybe wanna join us? That is, if you don’t have anywhere to be right now.”
“Um. Yeah sure. Let me just pay for this first.”
Fae nods her head, sitting back down. “Awesome.”
When Cai finally walks away, Fae turns to me with a triumphant smile. “He’s nice.”
I gnaw on my bottom lip. “I guess you’re right."
