By Wednesday afternoon, Ellis had finished the painting. In the interior space, revealed behind the fallen wall, he put a boy and dog, obviously in the process of exploring the remains. With the dog at his side, the boy was kneeling over a small patch of flowers that had sprung up. His face glowed with delight as he reached to pick one. The next morning, Ellis took the painting down to the gallery. Randall was, as Ellis had expected, somewhat dismayed. “This isn’t dark,” Randall said. “It’s not light, the way your old works are, but it’s not dark.” He looked at Ellis accusingly.
