Chapter 6: Karime

1257 Words
You would think as vampires, we would have bodies laying all over our homes because we drink blood....so not the case. We aren't complete animals like the filthy wolves, they probably hump while they eat at the table. If they even use tables to eat at.  Nope. We eat civilized. Our diet consists of Blood...naturally.. and human food. Our bodies can digest both however, we can't survive only on human food. We need blood to keep our gifts and powers strong. We can't just have anybody's blood either. It has to be from someone of the opposite s*x. Males drink from females and females drink from males. Weird how the Blood Goddess decided that was the only way we could eat. But hey who am I tell the creator of our race to say how we should survive. Drinking from a male doesn't have to be s****l, however, it is intimate, but it is the only way to know who your true mate is. I am surprised everyone isn't going around sampling each other's blood to find their true mate.  No. Everything is always civilized at our house, especially with my parents. My mother, Sereme, always needs to have everything perfect. My father is an Elder, we must always be worthy of being an Elder family, or so my mother says. I could care less about appearances and I think my father would agree with me. My father Kane, is more down to earth. He doesn't let his title be all he is. Yes, he is one of the most important members of the council because of his gift to read minds but he also has the kindest heart. I love my father for the person he is and how he treats others, even the stinky wolf packs.  "Karime! Why did you start eating without us?" My mother said sternly as she and my father entered the dining room. "Sorry, mother. Dem and I were starving and couldn't wait." I sheepishly said as Dem and I stood up.  "Really, child? It's as if I have never taught you manners. Hello, Demetrio. It gives us such a pleasure to have you eat at our table." My mother said as she walked over to Demetrio to hug him. "Thank you, Lady Sereme. It is an honor to be invited to share your table," Dem said as he returned her hug. "Nice to see you Demetrio. You been keeping my girl out of trouble?" My father said as Dem kissed his ring as well.  "Hello, Elder Kane. I have been doing my best." Dem said and looked at me. I smiled and hugged my father. "Hello, father. I don't need help staying out of trouble. I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself."  "Yes, my sweet. I have heard you say that many times, yet I see the fresh bruise on your cheek here, and am wondering who I need to kill for it being there." My father said as he touched my cheek. "I am fine father. It was my own clumsiness. Please stow your fangs and claws away." I said as I covered his hand with my own. "Karime!? What did you do? What will others say when they see you?" My mother chastised me as she sat down in the seat next to my father's chair, which was at the head of the table. "I'm fine, Mother. Thank you for asking. And I did not DO anything? It was just an accident. I will make sure to freshen my makeup before leaving the house." I said curtly, to appease her. My father smiled and mouthed "Thank you" to me then turned at walked to sit at his place at the table. "I hope so, Karime. What will the clansmen think when they see you out and about all bruised up like a commoner. Seriously, sometimes I think you do things just to make your father and I look bad in front of others. How are we to be exemplars of the community if we can't even control our own daughter's behavior." My mother said as she used her fork to hit her glass to announce that she was ready to be served. Federica our maidservant promptly brought out two plates of the first course to my parents. "Thank you, Federica." My father kindly said to her. "You're forever welcome. Elder Kane." Federica said quietly. Then turned and quietly walked out of the dining room. "So what did you two do this evening?" My father asked as he dipped into his soup. "Uhh...nothing much father. We just went exploring in the market down in the village. We heard talk about a wolf pack caravan arriving at Yellow Moon lands." I innocently said and then sipped my water.  Demetrio choked on his soup and had a coughing fit. After he drank water and calmed down he said, "Excuse me. I am sorry." My mother patted his hand and smiled, "Do eat slower, son." "Yes, my lady," Dem answered. "Yes, we had heard the same thing at the council briefing this evening. We will double our guards on our outer perimeters. I do hope they are not increasing their numbers with intentions of starting war again. We have been at peace for some time now, well except for the rogues of course, but nevertheless, war is not good for either of our species. However, there are some members of the council that would think differently than I, even if they don't speak out loud." My father said looking at me. "How did peace come about father?" I asked, eating my soup. "When the new alpha of the Yellow Moon pack took over he sent ambassador scouts to speak peace terms with our ambassador scouts. We stay to ourselves and they stay to themselves. No need for more bloodshed after centuries of war caused by the old council and the old alpha. Alpha Damian wants there to be peace, as do we. Too many lives were lost throughout those years. Thank the Blood Goddess and Moon Goddess for reconciling and helped the species be at peace," Father said. "I see, father. I have not heard much of Alpha Damian, other than he was a ruthless fighter and Beta to the old Alpha." I said curiously.  "While I have never met Alpha Damian, I do believe him to be a good leader to his people. Well as good a leader as a wolf can be to a bunch of other wolves. I do believe his intentions of keeping the peace are pure, which is what I said at the council meeting. Not everyone agreed with me. But I will always speak my mind even when they won't speak theirs." Father said. "Kane, I really wish you would not stir things up at the meetings." Mother said. "Sereme, I always speak my mind and if I need to say out loud what the other members are thinking I will always do that. I would not be honorable to my title if I didn't." My father said to my mother. Then turned to me and said, "Karime, I do not want you or anybody else exploring outside the village and I want you inside the walls of this house way before sunup. At least until our ambassador scout hears back from the request he sent for a meeting with the pack." "Yes, father. I understand." I said.  I winked at Demetrio without my parents seeing. He shook his head slowly at me.
