I couldn't react in time. The silver arrow had zoomed up to me with lightning speed. A bone-chilling sensation, dripping with the stench of death, inched closer and closer to my body. As I felt death creeping up on me, I closed my eyes in despair.
But surprisingly, that cold shiver arrow barely grazed my nose bridge and vanished instantly. In sheer panic, I popped my eyes open only to see the sharp arrowhead aimed right between my eyes. It was just an inch away from skewering my skull and taking my life.
Out of nowhere, a man's hand gripped the silver arrow shaft, halting it from impaling me. I didn't even notice when he had stepped up to me. His eyes, a mesmerizing shade of gold, were locked onto mine, while his silver hair fluttered in the breeze.
He exuded an air of confidence and was incredibly good-looking. His tall, muscular build stood like a protective wall, shielding me from the imminent danger. In that moment, it almost felt like I heard a faint call from my inner wolf, though it quickly faded away.
I stood there, stunned and bewildered, as my heart raced faster and louder than ever before. It was an entirely new sensation.
With gentleness, the man helped me to my feet, all the while holding that dangerous arrow in his hand.
"Weapons should be pointed at real enemies, not our own kind," he said firmly, snapping the arrow in two and tossing it aside. "Only cowardly foxes resort to weapons in a fight. The Moon Goddess gave us the finest weapon of all: our bodies."
The other guests in the hall were frozen in place, except for Alpha Ron, who wore a sneer on his face. "Alpha Klaus, you're late."
"I apologize for that," Alpha Klaus responded in a deep voice. "But it appears I'm not too late now."
"You just blocked an arrow meant for that slave," Alpha Ron grumbled with irritation. "I should've killed her."
"As I said, weapons should be aimed at true enemies, not our own kind," Alpha Klaus maintained his eye contact with Alpha Ron. "If the king were to hear that you had the time to kill our own kind here instead of supporting the front lines, he wouldn't be pleased."
"Tonight's banquet topic is discussing matters related to supporting the front lines," Alpha Ron explained. "We've all been waiting for you."
"In that case, let me savor a good meal first," Alpha Klaus casually took a seat at an empty nearby chair and plucked a cherry from a table, popping it into his mouth. "Afterward, I'll share the news about the front lines with everyone."
"Of course," Alpha Ron agreed, "not only that, but I'll also arrange the best room for you and the sexiest she-wolf in our pack, so you won't feel lonely tonight."
"This girl here isn't bad," Alpha Klaus added with a sly grin as he reached out and pulled me into his embrace. I could feel something rather firm between his legs pressing against me.
"Hey, you smell really nice," he buried his head in my collar and took a deep sniff.
I wanted to break free from his embrace, but he held me tight. He whispered in a voice only we could hear, right into my ear, "Don't move, if you want to stay alive."
Was he warning me? I immediately froze in fear.
"I thought you were only loyal to your future mate," the guy who had been teasing me sneered, "Looks like those rumors were all lies."
"Alpha Duke, at least I don't sleep with the Queen's maids like you do," Klaus shot back with contempt. "I heard you even got one of those poor maids pregnant. Does your mate know about that?"
"You're talking nonsense," Duke, the Alpha wolf, slammed his hand on the table in anger. "I'll kill you!"
"Calm down, Duke. You're no match for him," another scarred-faced Alpha advised, "Klaus is the strongest Alpha. You can't take him."
Alpha Ron quickly intervened, "Duke, don't act recklessly."
"She's just a slave," the scarred-faced man remarked, "since Klaus has a liking for slaves, why don't you give him that girl, Ron?"
He deliberately glanced at Klaus and continued, "Maybe it's because Klaus has Omega wolf blood mixed in him that he's so fond of slaves. Ron, give him the girl."
"Perhaps I should tear your mouth first," Klaus said coldly, "gentlemen, are we going to fight over a slave?"
"She's not worthy," Alpha Ron sneered, casting a disdainful look at me.
"The banquet continues," he announced loudly, "fill the glasses with wine and let's enjoy the rest of the evening."
The music resumed, and the hall once again filled with noise. The incident was quickly forgotten by the guests. At that moment, a hand gently squeezed my waist, and the man holding me whispered softly in my ear, "Girl, don't space out. Serve me some wine."
I tried to slide down from his lap to reach the wine bottle, but he continued to hold me close. So, I had no choice but to stretch my arm forward to get the bottle. As I poured the wine, I accidentally spilled some on my hand. He saw it and brought my hand to his lips, gently licking the spilled red wine from my hand. His actions were gentle but made me extremely nervous.
Oh God, what was he planning to do?
My heart raced as this was the first time I had been held by a man like this. His firm chest pressed against my back, and heat radiated from behind me. I desperately wished for him to let me go, but he showed no signs of releasing his grip.
Anxiously, I glanced around, and the girls in the arms of other Alphas appeared exceptionally affectionate. They would occasionally whisper something in the Alphas' ears to make them happy. Meanwhile, I sat stiffly in the man's embrace.
During the banquet, the Alphas discussed matters related to the war on the front lines. Each Alpha voiced their opinions on the matter, but I couldn't care less about their war discussions. I just hoped the banquet would end soon so I could finally be free.
As the banquet neared its conclusion, the man holding me said to Alpha Ron, "I apologize, but I'm feeling quite intoxicated. I'd like to return to my room."
Just when I thought I might finally get my freedom, Alpha Klaus stood up while still holding onto my waist.
"Girl, come with me," he smiled at me.
"Please, don't," I quietly pleaded.
"Do you want to stay here and be taken away by another man?" He pushed me slightly with his hand on my waist. "Let's go; I can't wait any longer."
Oh God, I could already imagine what might happen if I went with him to his room. What should I do?
He led me away from the banquet hall, heading toward another building where guests stayed. As we crossed the garden, he suddenly stopped in his tracks.
"Do you smell the flowers?" He deeply inhaled the scent, "It's the fragrance of gardenias."
"Yes," I replied softly.
"Perhaps we should do something here," he grinned with wicked intent.
"I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean," I timidly replied. He abruptly pushed me down onto the grass. His large, strong body pinned me down, and with one hand, he pulled my clothes down, revealing my bra as my right side of the dress slid off my shoulder.
"Please, don't," I begged.
"Go ahead and scream, girl," he whispered in my ear, "I want to hear you scream."
