I rocked Aspen in my arms until she fell asleep with her head on my shoulder. I felt bad for taking Aspen from her family, but I also knew I couldn’t live without her, and Ember Moon needed us both. Trying to comfort my wife was hard work, but I had harder work ahead of me.
The levees and dams had to be maintained and strengthened, and several villages in the south needed extra helping hands to rebuild after the flooding. We had people starving in the street, and while the crops were being treated for blight, we’d already lost so many that the situation was still dire.
