9 David Mayer smelled (surprise) of garlic. “Hi.” “Hi.” So much for profound. I don’t know what I was expecting. Maybe I thought I’d open the door this afternoon and see David standing there, and suddenly it would all be clear. I’d understand his place in the whole scheme of things, and then I could get on with my life. Instead it was just this awkward moment of silence while David took in his immediate surroundings: my leg, my crutches, the layout of my house. “Where do you want to do this?” he asked. “Uh, in here, I guess.” He followed me into the living room.
