Their date was at a new restaurant – Pittoresque – that had opened up near her place of work. She was a journalist that gave reports and reviews on the best sites and restaurant in the cities, so she always knew the best places to eat and usually tried her best to convince him to go with her.
Walt stopped at a flower stall just before he reached the restaurant and bought a bouquet of her favorite white roses. Even though he had heard her voice a few hours ago and knew for a fact that she was alive, he felt this sense of fear and unease. He supposed it was normal though, the last time he saw her was in the casket during her funeral. His jaw clenched as he remembered that cold rainy day.
“Walt!” her sonorous voice called out to him from inside the building. He looked through the glass window of the small brick wall restaurant and saw her waving and smiling at him. Her hair was pulled back into a bun with a few loose strands framing her perfect face, she wore a red dress that accentuated her figure and had a subtle v-line that showed off her smooth creamy skin.
He walked quickly into the restaurant to meet her and could hear his heart pounding in his ears. It was her, it was really her. After all this time, he would get to hold her and be with her, it almost felt like he would wake up from a dream any second.
“Hey,” she met him at the entrance, smiling up at his face. Everything was just like he remembered, even better if that was possible.
“Hey…” he responded slowly “uh, here, I got you these,” he thrust the flowers at her, he felt a little afraid to touch her.
“Aww, that’s so sweet of you,” she said and threw her arms around him, smacking the flower against his back. The unexpected contact shocked him but he managed to recover quickly and clasped his hands behind her. She pulled back and planted a quick kiss on his cheek.
“Come on, I reserved a table for us,” she grabbed his hand and pulled him into the dining area of the restaurant towards a very cute two-seated table. A single slim vase with tulips was placed on the cream silk covered table. The restaurant was very homely and smelled good. He supposed it was appropriate since its name literally meant ‘quaint’ in French.
“Here,” Walt said and pulled back a chair to help Ailsa sit. She placed the roses he had given her on the table and thanked him. By the time he settled into his own seat, she was smiling widely at him, her hands folded under her chin, elbows on the table. He was happy, at the same time he was afraid. Afraid that someone might snatch him away from this reality. The reality, that made him think about the game, maybe this was a game and he wasn’t aware. If it was, he never wanted to stop playing.
“So,” Ailsa said, breaking the comfortable silence that had enveloped them “this is nice, we never get time alone like this.”
“I know,” he replied. He extended his arm out on the table and offered his hand. She quickly placed her hand in his and smiled “I haven’t been the most attentive or loving boyfriend and I’m sorry.” He apologized, caressing the back of her hand with his thumb. She smiled sheepishly and rubbed her neck with her free hand.
“It’s okay…I forgive you. Besides, you were always busy with work and your real passion,” she said with a slight chuckle. She let go of his hand and called a waiter, instructing him to bring them a bottle of wine.
“Speaking of which, are you still playing that Fantasy game?” she asked as she perused over the menu. Walt sighed and grabbed his own menu, she reminded him of the one thing that he wasn’t sure how to prevent from happening.
“I am. I don’t think I’ll be taking it seriously anymore though, you’re my only priority now…” he said, causing a hearty laugh to erupt from her.
“Oh please, Walt. You and I both know that you’ll be back by the console this night,” she said, smirking at him. The waiter arrived and poured them each a glass of the wine before taking their orders. Ailsa ordered the chicken and salad, so Walt asked for the same thing. As he watched her take a sip of the wine, he realized something. He didn’t really want his equipment and account recalled in the game but that would happen in a month, unless…
“Play with me,” he said suddenly.
“What?” she placed her wine glass on the table, the rim was stained with her lipstick and he suddenly felt a little jealous of the cup.
“Play the game with me,”
“What? No, come on Walt, don’t be silly” she said with a giggle, carrying the glass up to her lips again.
“Please? Come on, you’re always asking what’s so great about the game” he pushed forward in his seat to give her his best winning look but she just eyed him warily over the rim of her cup “I’ll show you everything you need to know, I’ll teach you and we can be in a team together. We’ll be like all those gaming couples you hear about.” He said. She laughed again, showing off her pearly white teeth. The waiter brought their food which was smelled so good it made Walt’s mouth water a little.
“So what do you say?” he said, she was about to say something when he cut her off “if you agree, we could go back to my place together tonight and I’ll teach you how to play,”
Ailsa shook her head and chuckled, then she looked at him for a while with a slight smile on her face “you’re really something you know that?” she said.
“So…is that a yes?” he asked with an enthusiastic and infectious smile.
“Yes, ugh, fine,” she said and laughed “I hate you.”
“Well, that’s just too bad because I love you,” he said and looked into her eyes. She rolled her eyes and bit her lip to stop her from smiling.
“Shut up and eat your chicken,” she finally said.
“Yes ma’am,” Walt said and they smiled at each other.
He watched her as she ate her food and listened to her talk about the exciting new thing that was happening at her work, how good her yoga classes were going, and the fact that she was considering buying a pet. By the time they finished dessert, he felt closer to her than he ever felt in the entire year they had been together.
“Wow,” she said with a chuckle “I don’t think I’ve ever talked that much since we started dating,” he laughed back, it was like she had read his thoughts. He called the waiter for their bill.
“Well...I may not the best boyfriend in the world, but I’m going to do better, I promise.”
“I believe you.”
He paid for their dinner, tipped the waiter and they left the restaurant arm in arm. It was already dark out and because his apartment was all the way on the other side of the city, they took the Accelerate transport system. The system was built such that three users can use it at a time. It used comfortable glass boxes that sped around the city through particular routes at a high speed of 12,000 km/hr. People arrived at their destinations in seconds using that system, and it was easily accessible to the public at a rate.
Walt helped Ailsa into the box and they sat on the cushioned seats available and fastened their seatbelts. The system asked for their destination, Walt replied and after a quick zoom sound that felt like a sudden jerk, it announced that they had reached their destination. They alighted and made their way up to his apartment.
“Is fantasy the only game we’ll be playing?” Ailsa asked when they stopped in front of his door, Walt looked back at her and saw a twinkle in her eyes. He smirked and turned to face the face scanner on the door. The door unlocked and he turned back to her, she had taken off her heels.
“We can play any other game you want,” he said and wrapped his hands around her waist, pulling her closer to him. She giggled and threw her arms around his neck then tiptoed to plant a soft kiss on his lips. He kissed her back and used his back to push open the door which closed automatically when they entered. Her shoes dropped noisily on the floor behind him as they go in and she jumped a little so she could wrap her legs around his hips. He grabbed hold of her thighs to keep her steady and led them slowly towards the couch. She propped her arms behind her to help her sink into the couch then pulled him down with her.
“I’ve missed you so much,” Walt whispered as he kissed her neck. She giggled again and worked the buttons of his shirt.
“I missed you too Walt,” she said but he knew she could never realize just how much he missed her. They helped each other hurriedly out of their clothes and he made love to her quickly on the couch, then slowly on the floor. After they took a shower together and made love again, then they did it one last time in his bed after which she fell asleep in his arms. He smiled to himself as he watched her sleep, her eyelashes fluttering to show that she was dreaming. Walt hoped she was dreaming about him. He decided the game could wait till the next day then he fell asleep too.
