“I know he’ll be hiding out there, Saxon probably already sacrificed himself to strengthen him.” Miranda heard someone say. She felt like she was dreaming, her head was foggy and she was weak.
“How are you sure? Won’t he suspect that you’ll tell us that?” it was Ailsa’s voice this time. Miranda opened her eyes. Her first view was the blue sky, when she turned her head to the side, she saw her teammates and Scott. They sat in a circle, discussing something.
“Barnett is a bonehead. He had a magician set up barriers around the hideout…right before he killed him, so he wouldn’t think anyone would find him.” Scott said, then he paused and looked down “look, I know he’s there, and we need to go after him,”
“Okay, we’ll need a good plan. So we can avoid what happened to-Miranda! You’re awake,” Walt said as soon as he saw her. She forced herself to her feet and held her hand against a tree to steady herself. Ailsa got up quickly and ran to her side. Miranda slung her arm over Ailsa’s shoulder and the two of them walked over to the rest who were now standing.
“Are you okay?” Scott asked her but she ignored him. Ailsa helped Miranda sit, then she held her hands over her head.
“You still need a little rest,” Ailsa said.
“I’m fine.” Miranda waved Ailsa off “What are we planning to do about that bastard?” she asked and her teammates looked at themselves unsurely. Walt sat down again, the others followed suit and they started to explain what Scott had told them. Scott knew exactly where Barnett would be. He told them that the area was their team’s turf and that they usually ambush other teams, using the trees as covers.
“That was the same plan he had for you guys,” Scott said and they fell into silence.
“Where is this hideout exactly?” Michael asked.
“It’s a treehouse, located right in the middle of this forest. Barnett wanted us to plunder other teams and wait there until the team tournament,”
“How come no other person has found this treehouse and ambushed you?” Jenny spoke up, she had been silent the whole time because she was still apprehensive about trusting the guy.
“Like I said earlier. Barnett made a magician hide it, but I know how to get in,”
“What are we waiting for then?” Miranda said and pushed herself up “let’s go.”
Walt looked at her wearily. She was not her usual cheery, happy, and sarcastic self. That attack must have really taken a toll on her. He decided not to argue and told the rest of the team and Scott to start packing. He was not sure what to do about Scott, he had been very helpful and he had saved Miranda’s life but he was betraying his team and that was not a plus on his side. If what he claimed was true though and Barnett was recovering in that treehouse, then he would trust him. Until then, he had to keep his guard up and watch him closely.
“Hey,” Scott walked up to Miranda, where she was sharpening her claws. She did not carry any luggage and she just had to wait for the others to be done. He waited for a reply but none came.
“So, how are your wounds?” he said but still could not draw a reply from her “it would be nice if you could say thank you, you know?” he suddenly snapped. That seemed to catch her attention because she turned her head sharply to look at him.
“Thank you? What for?” she asked and he gaped at her.
“Oh, I don’t know…maybe saving your life?”
“And I bet that makes you the hero of the day doesn’t it?” she suddenly turned fully to face him, her eyes narrowed “Scott, the hero. After many long years of playing second fiddle to a blood-sucking psychopath, he finally did a good thing. Hurray for Scott,” she said, her voice dripping with venom. Scott looked at her, he suddenly felt overwhelming guilt and looked down. Miranda scoffed and looked at him like he was trash.
“Listen, buddy, you may have everyone fooled with your little ‘I’m a good guy now’ act, but I’ll be watching you, closely. And if I see any slip up…well, you know the rest,” she said and walked away from him. Scott clenched his jaw and his fists, determined in his mind to prove her wrong.
“Alright, let’s go,” Walt announced. He had seen the exchange between Miranda and Scott, wishing that the demon cat would be a little more appreciative of the fact that Scott prevented her from becoming air wolf snack.
“Jenny, cloaking spell please,” Walt said and she brought her fist to her palm and activated a cloaking spell on all of them.
Scott took the lead and led them into the forest. There was no path in the direction he was taking them but he told them that it was that way because they usually leaped from tree to tree. Ailsa decided to fly up and watch from above, which Walt agreed with.
They walked for five minutes, Scott having to reassure them every step of the way. Then they reached the center of the forest. Michael senses the barrier, it was a cloaking one but it was weak, so he and Jenny quickly deactivated it but they did it quietly. Walt had everyone surround the tree and told Miranda to use her shadow and stealth skills to check the treehouse out. She was only gone for a minute.
“He’s in there, but there’s no sign of Saxon,” she said.
“I knew it,” Scott said and looked at Walt.
“Okay, this will be easy but I want us to be as careful as possible,” Walt’s gaze was on Miranda as he spoke. She rolled her eyes at him.
Barnett sat in the middle of the treehouse. He was angry beyond all reasoning, the main cause being the betrayal he had a face from one of his teammates. When he as Saxon reached the treehouse, Saxon had let him feed on him to recover from the blows he took. Although, he could not grow his arm back. His most trusted companions – Saxon and Barry – had fallen to lower levels and had to retrain and recover. He was alone but he believed he could recover and seek vengeance. He was still thinking this when a loud crash filled the treehouse. He stood up and found himself surrounded by the Green Light team, Scott was also with them.
“You,” Barnett said to his former teammate. Then the attack started. Walt drew his sword and threw attacks at Barnett who dodged them as well as he could. Because he only had one arm now, he was slow and although he tried to land punches on Walt, he failed to.
He ran towards Walt and wanted to do a sweep kick but Miranda appeared behind him and dug her claws into his back. He howled then she kicked back, knocking him to the ground where Walt began to use his sword to s***h at him. In a desperate attempt to escape, Barnett punched the floor of the treehouse, breaking it and sending them falling to the forest floor.
He tried to run away but Walt was too fast for him. With a final whirlwind blow, he subdued the air wolf. Barnett fell to the ground. All his equipment had been destroyed and his rank drastically lowered. He could no longer participate in the game, he would have to start over. Walt and his teammates, raided the treehouse and recovered as much loot as they could.
“Scott!” Barnett called out when they were leaving “You’ll pay for this,” he said finally and faded. He had left the game. Scott swallowed and walked towards Walt and the others.
“I…I uh…I broke my contract with Milan,” he said “I would be honored if you would let me be an official member of your team,” his voice was somber and genuine. He wanted to be good for a change and even though what Barnett said had scared him a little, he would not back down and be weak again.
Walt looked at the others. Everyone smiled except Miranda who turned her head away. Ailsa placed a hand on her shoulder and the demon cat sighed and rolled her eyes.
“Fine,” she said then eyed Scott “thanks for saving me earlier,” she muttered.
“What?” Scott asked, not sure that he heard her right.
“I’m not going to repeat myself!” Miranda said, stomped her foot, and walked away. Walt laughed and patted Scott on the back.
“Welcome to the team.”
