Creating a new account was harder than Walt had anticipated. It turns out that the software was designed such that a person could not have more than one account and because the account he had before was in his name; he couldn’t open another. Luckily for him, all other information concerning the previous account was the company’s information, only his official name was used. So, all he had to do was use a different name and input his original information but it still took a while before he realized.
“Come on, come on. Let’s play already,” Ailsa complained. Walt looked at her and rolled his eyes. She had become a little obsessed with the game, at first it made him feel weirdly proud but it was starting to annoy him.
“Okay, sheesh,” he replied and plugged in the console “ready?” he asked and she nodded enthusiastically. Then he pressed play on the pad, they closed their eyes and were both transported to Fantasy.
Walt was registered as a novice and was transported to the Fountain of Origin which was located at the entrance of the Land of Origin where novices stayed until they can complete enough tasks to allow them to leave the village. Standing in front of the fountain, he was given the race of a Terran again, which was no surprise to him.
“Hidden profession unlocked. Spell swordsman,” the system announced as soon as he touched the Prophecy Stone next to the fountain. He was pleasantly surprised; he was just a swordsman before and he wondered what could have changed.
He didn’t wonder for long though because he knew Ailsa would be waiting for him. So, he made his way into the Land of Origin, and just as he expected, she was waiting there in the elf outfit that made his head turn.
“Hey,” she said and placed a hand on her hip “you’re still a Terran uh? I wonder if interspecies relations are allowed,” she laughed at her own joke and grabbed on to his arm. He only rolled his eyes and followed her.
“Okay, so what you need to do is-”
“You mean what we need to do,” Ailsa interrupted his carefully thought out speech. He sighed and continued.
“What we need to do is to finish as many adventures as possible as fast as we can, so we can leave this village but we need to finish the adventures together because we’re a team. It took me like three days to finish the adventures, so it should be easier now.”
“Sounds good, but what happens after we leave?”
“We’ll look for more adventure and increase our skills and experience points, it’s for fun remember? And if our points build up enough, we’ll get to be in the decennial World League.”
Ailsa did not comment and they made their way silently to the Adventurer’s Hall which was the largest building in the entire village. The entrance was littered with all three races (Terrans, Elves, and Demons) as well as all sorts of professions. The building was three stories high and had a huge arched doorway entrance, it was completely concrete except for the doors and windows which were wooden. Ailsa followed Walt who seemed to know exactly what he was doing and they made their way up the steps.
Walt pushed open the door which led them into a tavern-like space. There were tens of people inside seated in wooden benches and they were talking or drinking. The scene surprised Walt a little, the last time he had been in the hall, there were fewer people but he guessed that the game had grown so much that hundreds of new players registered every day and they don’t get to leave immediately.
“Wow, that is a lot of people,” Ailsa voiced his thoughts but he only nodded in reply.
“Let’s go to that board, adventures are posted there,” he said and they made their way towards the huge board that was posted on a wall directly opposite the entrance to the hall. They were very disappointed when they got there though, there were no adventures on the board.
“What the…” Walt whispered.
“Newcomers eh?” a Terran that was leaning against the wall said and walked over to them “You came too late, there are too many adventurers and too little adventures,” he said to Ailsa and gave her a smile. Walt stepped in front of her and frowned at the stranger.
“So, what is everyone doing here then?”
“Waiting for the next task to be posted, if you’re lucky and you get to do it, your skill points move up. There’s only one task left for me to do, but you two will wait a long time,” the guy was dressed like a mad warrior. He looked over Walt’s shoulder to smile at Ailsa.
“I should be out before the day ends. I can pick you to be on my team if you want. That way, you won’t have to suffer with him,” he said to her which angered Walt.
“Hey, back off-” Walt said and pushed the guy a little. They were starting to attract some attention which made Ailsa panic a little. She quickly stepped between the two men and gave the stranger the fiercest look she could muster.
“Listen, man, I don’t know you and I don’t want to know you. I already have a team, so back off,” she said. The mad warrior chuckled then put his hands up in surrender and left them. After he left, Ailsa turned to Walt and hit his arm.
“What was that for?” Walt whined.
“For almost causing a scene, you should have just ignored him,”
“He was hitting on-” Ailsa silenced him by covering his mouth with her hand.
“Shhh, enough about that. What are we going to do about the adventures?” she asked, he gave her a bored look because he couldn’t speak since her hand was covering his mouth. She giggled and removed her hand. He licked his lips, then scratched behind his head and sighed.
“Our best option is to wait till the next adventure is announced and work as fast and as quickly as we can. Otherwise, we might be stuck here for days.” He said and she agreed.
They ended up stuck in the Land of Origin for two weeks. An hour in fantasy was equivalent to a minute in the real world. So, they actually spent about six hours getting out of the village but the perceived it as two weeks. The two weeks were excruciating and seemed to never end.
They had to find somewhere to live first and were given a room in the Adventurer’s Hall that had a hay bed and no heat. It was the medieval ages and apparently temperature-controlled rooms did not exist yet. Ailsa was forced to work as a waitress in the hall since they had no coin to pay for the room and Walt was the one who tried to find adventures. Since they were a team, their achievements were the same.
A particular afternoon, the task of finding slimes was assigned and both Ailsa and Walt had gone to finish it. The slimes were huge worm-like creatures that were eating up the vegetation in a farmland near the village. Many adventures tried to catch them but the creatures were too slimy and slipped as they held them. Some tried destroying them but as soon as they blew them up, their scattered parts mutated into whole slimes which increased their numbers.
Walt was not sure what he was going to do but took Ailsa with him because elves had the power of luck and that could be useful. When they got to the farmland, the slimes were now in hundreds and were eating through the field like locust. They were so big that Ailsa screamed at the sight of them and held on to Walt who laughed at her. A tiny slime moved towards them and seemed to like Ailsa. Despite her fear, she carried the little guy, telling Walt how cute it was. In that moment, a lightbulb went off in his head and he knew what he had to do.
He told Ailsa to walk near the slimes and jump around to catch their attention. She argued at first but eventually gave in and stomped angrily to the slimes, she first moved around provocatively then when they didn’t respond, she started to jump and yell. The largest slime looked over to her and started to crawl towards her. When she noticed it, she screamed and ran. Soon, all the slimes were after her and she was running as fast as she could, screaming.
Walt ran behind the hoard and told her to run towards a nearby river. She did as she was told, still screaming. When she got to the river, she turned and saw the slimes charging towards her. She stood frozen in place, unsure of what to do next as the drew nearer, so she just held her hands in front of herself in a flimsy attempt to cower. Then suddenly, she was pushed out of the way and fell onto the grass with a thump.
Ailsa sat up and saw Walt get pushed into the river by all those slimes. She screamed out his name but soon stopped screaming when she realized the slimes were dissolving as they fell into the river. She quickly ran to river bank and helped him out. They pushed the rest of the slime into the water together and then the system informed them that their experience points have increased. After that, they were well respected in the village and did more tasks until they were able to get enough points to upgrade them from level one players.
In the time they spent in the village, Ailsa found out that as an elf, it is necessary to go to the Elves Valley where she would be assigned her position as an elf. It was called Waking. So, after they left the village, Walt and Ailsa made their way to the Elves Valley to help her wake.
