Chapter 10: Task*

Everyone in the group took a breather after almost being drowned. There was a door at the end of the room, and nobody wanted to go first. Alannah rolled her eyes and walked forward. She knew the best policy is to keep moving, your survival chances increase that way. Alannah opened the door and gasped at what she saw. The environment was tropical! They were in a middle of a rainforest! 

Alannah was pushed out of the way by Ben.

“f*****g hell, where are we?” Ben said

“A Rainforest somewhere in the tropic, I can smell salt as well, so somewhere near the sea,” Alannah said.

“What the f**k are we supposed to do?” Ben asked

“I am not sure,” Alannah said with a shrug.

“Why do people expect me to know everything?” Alannah thought.

 “ I think it is best to scout out the area and see what comes up!” she advised.

“Right!” Ben leered as the other guys came out. When everyone was outside a voice came on the speaker system.

“Well, good morning everyone, I hope you had a good nights rest! Well done for surviving the first challenge, shame about Mark though isn’t it? The male voice said in a mocking tone.

“I am going to shove that microphone up to his arse!” Bruce muttered.

“Well, now to the next and final challenge! The task is simple, you have to cross the island in three days. There is a dock with a ship waiting to take you away from this hell hole!” The male voice said over the speakers.

“Is that it?” Ben scoffed

“Oh did I forget to tell you? There can only be two winners, the rest of you will be properly disposed of! Good luck now!” With that, the message ended.

“Well, that is some proper f****d up s**t!” A group member complained.

“It is designed to break us up, if we are not together we are weaker!” Alannah pointed out.

“Shut up you stupid b***h! You are only saying that because you want us to carry you and lover boy there!” Ben sneered.

“Ben is right, you know!” Another man said.

“I say we f*****g get rid of them now! They are on their own, if we see them again we kill them!” Another man said.

“Fine! We will do that, but give us 10 minutes to look around before we go. It is the least you can do after she saved your arse earlier!” Bruce argued.

“Oh look, the little arsehole has suddenly got brave!” Another man jeered.

“Shut up! I don’t like having debts over my head. You have got 10 mins and then we are done. Nick and Ash, watch them like a hawk. If they stay longer than 10 minutes, you know what to do!” Ben said coldly.

Alannah and Bruce ran off to look around with Nick and Ash. Halfway around the building, there was a grass area that had kit bags laid out in a grid pattern. Some of the kit bags looked like they were full to the brim with stuff, whilst others looked less so.

“Wow! It looks like there is everything we need in those big bags.” Nick said.

“Let’s grab them before these idiots!” Ash jeered as he walked forward.

“Wait!” Alannah shouted as she read the sign which said:

                     Avarice has ruined more souls than extravagance. 

“Shut up b***h! We saw them first” said Ash as continued to walk towards the centre of the grid. He picked up the bag and instantly a spike shot up from the ground piercing Ash’s foot. Ash dropped the bag and screamed in pain.

“Ash!” Nick said and was going to run to help his friend, but he stopped. He turned to Alannah and said, “How did you know?” 

“The sign, it is warning against being greedy. Plus look at the turf, it has been freshly laid. I also have a feeling that they are not going to do any favours!” Alannah said simply.

“So, as long as I don’t touch the bags, I can get Ash?” Nick asked. 

“Yes, the bags are on pressure sensors,” Alannah said.

 Nick nodded and moved forward slowly. He grabbed him and ran back. “Take what you need and go!” Nick ordered.

“Good luck!” Alannah said grimly. Alannah knew that to have a chance of surviving this, they would need luck and lots of it!

“You too!” Nick said as Alannah and Bruce picked up the lightest bag. As expected, nothing happened and they both sprinted into the forest.

Present Day - Battle Stadium 

This place was not what Kurt was expecting at all! Kurt was expecting some underground cave in the middle of nowhere. Instead, he was standing in a state of the art building, complete with all the facilities you would expect in a sports arena.

 Xan had a private room that overlooked the ring area, which was a large metal cage with a sand floor. There were also large screens so that none of the viewers missed the action. The place was packed and this was not a major match.

“How did you get away with this?” Kurt asked as he sipped a whiskey whilst sitting in a large lazy boy style chair. 

“The Police Chief has his private box. These battles are steeped in tradition and immensely popular!” Xan explained with a shrug.

“Oh, I can’t wait to see the Huli jing kick arse! I hope our Vixen is in full form!” Chynna said excitedly and Denug smiled at seeing his wife happy.

“Huli jing?”Kurt asked, he had not heard the term before.

“It is the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit in Chinese.” Grace explained.

“Who cares? I want the fight to get started!” Theo moaned. 

“Uncle!” Grace said rolling her eyes. 

Just then the music started and everybody cheered as a small Chinese man came out with a microphone.

“Welcome, I am Li Qiang and I will be your commentator this evening. I would like to thank you all for coming and to the pay to view audience from around the world!” Li Qiang Said and the crowd erupted. He waited till the crowd died down before continuing. “The fighters are ready and as always a coin was flipped to decide which team will pick their first fighter and opponent. All I can say is wow, this is going to be an epic battle! The Silver Wolves won the coin toss and they have chosen the epic Juggernaut!” Li Qiang shouted and the crowd went wild as a 6 foot 9 tall man walked down the ramp. Bold, covered in scars and beyond muscular, he waved with one hand to the crowd. In his other hand, he carried a double-headed hammer with a long handle.

“The Juggernaut weighs in at 290lbs of pure muscle! Born in Germany and raised by the Silver Wolves, this epic warrior has over 200 wins under his belt. He is known for breaking his opponents' bones and grinding them to dust!” Li Qiang said. Kurt could quite easily believe it!

“His contestant is the one, the only Rrrrreeeeeeeeed Vixen!” Li Qiang boomed. 

The Stadium erupted as a small red-headed woman, dressed in loose-fitting black yoga pants and a cold shoulder with a black top with a red nine-tailed fox on it. Her hair was tied up in a simple bun and she had army boots on. She carried a long silver coloured chain with a weight on the end.

“No!” Kurt said getting up from his seat and heading to the box’s private balcony. Xan followed him out.

“The Red Vixen hardly needs introduction these days. Standing at 5 foot 10 and weighing in at 147lbs, this English Rose has clawed her way to over 250 victories! She is the embodiment of grace and beauty! Know for being able to spot her opponents weaknesses and exploit them! ” Li Qiang boomed as Alannah smiled and walked down to the cage.

“This can’t happen Xan, you need to stop this now!” Kurt shouted at Xan in a panic.

“What is wrong?” Xan said confused.

“What is wrong? What is wrong? Alannah is about to face a bloody giant twice her size! She is going to get seriously hurt!” Kurt said exasperated. 

Kurt’s need to protect this woman was out of control. He wanted to run down, knock 10 bells out of the giant and scope her up into his arms.

“You should really have more faith in her! She can more handle herself Kurt“ Chynna said coming out on the balcony. 

“My sister is right, she is a force to be reckoned with!” Xan said, thinking back to all the times Alannah had kicked his arse. Kurt gripped the balcony rail so hard his hands started to turn white.

Meanwhile, in the fighting cage, Alannah and the Juggernaut were eyeing each other up.

“Andromeda‘s chains? You insult me!” Juggernaut said spitting into the sand below as the door to the cage was shut and chained.

“Oh, get over yourself, John! I have beaten you before!” Alannah said using the fighter’s true name. She was not in the mood for any bull s**t.

“Ha! I am going to break so many of your tiny bones, Tao is going to have to carry you out in a coffin!” John threatened.

The count down started and Alannah centred herself. She quietened her mind as she started to swing her chain. Alan ah knew she needed to keep as far away as possible from John. If he got her in close range, he would surely crush her. 

The alarm sounded and John came at her with a powerful hit with his hammer. She dodged and snapped her chain hitting John at the side of the neck. A gash formed and blood started to trickle down his neck and chest.

“With the first snap of her chain, blood has been drawn!” Li Qiang boomed and the crowd went wild.

John acted like it did not matter to him, he swung his hammer around aiming for Alannah’s face. She ducked and aimed the chain at John’s feet. Alannah’s chain twisted round his ankle, as his hammer slammed into the side of the cage sending a booming sound across the stadium. 

Alannah moved behind him and started to pull the chain. She hoped that she could lift his leg and unbalance him, but he was too f*****g heavy!

“Oh no, you don’t!” John shouted as he turned around and grabbed the chain. Alannah was thrown into the side of the cage as he swung the chain to the side. Alannah felt winded, but she had not time to catch her breath, she knew she had to move. She was right as soon as she moved left, a large hammer crashed into the position her head had been a few seconds before!

Somehow Alannah still had hold of the chain, but it was still wrapped around John’s ankle.

“What is wrong Princess? Is it because your weapon is now useless?” John leered as he swung his hammer again. 

Alannah dodged again, she hoped he would get tired soon. She kept moving and he changed tactics and pulled in the chain. Alannah was caught off balance and fell to the ground.

“Ohhhh! The Vixen is in trouble now! She is in a dangerous position so low on the ground and her weapon is lost. How is she going to get out of this one?” Li Qiang roared.

“f**k!! Come on Alannah, get the f**k up!” Kurt shouted from the balcony, but there was no way she could hear the roar of the crowd.

Alannah was too busy anyway, she was rolling out of the way of a hammer that was coming down. Repeatedly.

 “There is no way I can deal with this guy on an equal footing, especially with my weapon tied around that i***t’s foot!” Alannah thought. 

Alannah rolled into the cage side and suddenly then had an idea!

“Alannah hurry he is coming!” Xan shouted at the top of his voice, Alannah was going to be trapped in the corner and be battered. 

Alannah was well aware of this fact as she got to her feet, instead of running out of the corner, she turned around and started to climb. The whole arena was shocked.

“In an unusual move, the Vixen is climbing up the side of the cage! Is she running away or hoping to save herself from injury?” Li Qiang asked.

“No, you don’t!” John hissed as he untied the chain from his ankle and wiped it. 

Alannah felt immense pain across her back, as the chain connected with her back. She kept on climbing higher until she reached the ceiling. John was standing under her, madly whipping the chain and bashing the hammer against the cage edge to try and dislodge her.

 “Hold on, hold on!” Alannah kept saying as some of the chain whips connected causing gashes, which started to flow with blood. 

Alannah looked down and saw John close to the cage. This was the moment Alannah had been waiting for! She pushed off and let herself drop landing straight on John’s shoulders. John was completely shocked and tried to grab her, whipping the chain madly around. 

This is what Alannah was counting on! She grabbed the chain, not taking the time to register the liquid pain she felt in her forearm. In a split second, she had the chain around John’s neck and she started to pull. 

John started to gasp and fight for air. His hands clawed are the chain and then he suddenly started to punch Alannah. The first punch connected with her ribs and she felt three of them break, making her cough up some blood. Alannah pulled tighter as the punches kept coming. Alannah would not budge, she kept holding on for dear life. 

John’s face was turning purple, and in one last effort to dislodge her he slammed down on his back. Alannah felt her shoulder dislocate and something puncture her lung. However, after a few more attempts at removing the chain, John finally fell unconscious. Alannah released him and got up slowly, gasping for air. She saw the cage been opened and she stumbled towards it. Tao was there, waiting with Maya.

“Unbelievable! The Vixen has won an incredible match, with the odds very much stacked against her! The Wolves thought they could get 3 easy points. Instead, they got their arses handed to them! I hope Chairman Lang is proud of his little Vixen tonight!” Li Qiang boomed.

Alannah reached Tao and said, “The others better not lose!” Before collapsing into his arms. Tao quickly threw her into a bridal hold and jogged to the medical room.

Xan was too busy trying to calm Kurt down to see what had happened until Denug received a call.

“Boss, it’s Alannah- she is in a bad way and had to go into surgery. They want our consent before they operate.” Denug said

“f*****g yes, of course, no matter the cost!” Xan snapped.

“I have to f*****g see her now!” Kurt said with a furious glare in his eyes.
