Bakery

Yvonne “Why are we here so early?” Darla yawns as I walk up to the bakery. She is standing beside Paula and Jeffery. “Some royal guy is coming,” I say, trying not to shudder. For the last couple of days, my dreams have been plagued by a majestic black wolf that makes Elpis act like a lovesick puppy. She has pretty much forgotten about Aero and Cameron. “The alpha wants us to make extra cupcakes and cakes,” Emmilou walks up. “So, we are up early.” “Mom,” Darla whines. I say nothing as we all file into the kitchen. Emmilou gathers us and explains our tasks then lets us go. I put on my apron and get right to work. My mind keeps wandering as I work, but I am able to finish my tasks. ‘Who is the black wolf?’ I wonder while Elpis snickers. “They don’t even have s*x,” Darla laughs as I walk by her. “Really?” Paula giggles. “I notice they don’t look at each other.” For some reason, I know who they are talking about. “Poor Alpha,” Darla snickers. I shake my head and go back to my station. I don’t want to listen to Cameron’s lack of a s*x life. It serves him right. However, I do feel for Destiny. She deserves someone better than Cameron. “Take a break,” Emmilou claps. “Fifteen minutes.” I take a batch of cupcakes out of the oven and head outside. The bakery is in a strip mall with other stores and businesses. I walk over to the convenience store to grab something to snack on. “Hello, Yvonne,” Rosie, the cashier, greets me. She is a friend of my mom’s. “Rosie,” I grin as I grab a bag of Cheetos and a bottle of Sprite. “Did you hear,” Rosie grins. “Some royal guy is coming to the pack.” “I did hear,” I nod. “We are doing extra work for his arrival,” I laugh as I set my stuff on the counter. “Oh,” Rosie shrugs. “I guess it’s the royal beta or something. I don’t really know.” “I wonder what he is coming here for,” I say. Rosie smirks and rings up my stuff. “Who knows.” I take my Cheetos, walk back to the bakery, and sit at one of the tables out front. I munch while strolling through my phone. I see a couple of messages from Vicky, so I respond. “You smell good,” A voice says behind me. I don’t need to turn to know it’s Cameron. He has been stalking me the last few days. “I do work in a bakery,” I muttered without looking at him. “No, you smell good,” he says right into my ear. I elbow him, “Go away, Cameron. You have your mate.” “You are my mate,” He whispers and walks away. I roll my eyes. I finish my chips and head back into the bakery. Elpis is strangely silent. ‘Are you okay?’ I ask her. ‘I’m fine,’ She huffs. ‘Aero tried to talk to me, but I ignored him.’ ‘You can talk to him if you want,’ I say. ‘He isn’t my mate,’ She states. ‘Okay,’ I say and get back to work. It’s nearly five pm before we finish and leave for the day. My back aches as I get into my car and drive to the bar. I am having drinks with Vicky and some others. “Yvonne!” Vicky yells and waves me over. She is with two other women and one man. “Sorry, I’m a mess,” I say as I look at my soiled pants and stained shirt. “Don’t be sorry,” Vicky laughs. “It’s mostly dark in here, and we are drinking mind-altering substances.” “Hey, Yvonne,” Vicky’s cousin Beth greets me. “Beth,” I smile, then look at the others. The other woman is Amy, and the man is her mate, Tim. “How are things going at the shop, Amy?” I ask. “Great, Yvonne,” Amy grins. “Things are starting to take off.” Amy just opened a clothing store. “I think I’ll come over tomorrow to look around,” I say. “She has some adorable things,” Vicky says. “I am so proud of her,” Tim says as he kisses Amy’s cheek. He is a low-level warrior. I get up to go to the bar and order something. I am only nineteen, but we are allowed to drink at eighteen in the pack. “Give me a Mikes,” I tell the bartender. As I am walking back to the table, I see Cameron with my brother and Dylan. Aidan waves me over, “Hey, little sis,” He ruffles my hair. “Did you just come straight from work?” I look down. “Yeah.” I glance at Cameron, who is just staring at me. “We had a long day making cakes for the royal coming.” “He isn’t a royal,” Cameron mumbles. “He is the Royal Beta.” “Okay, whatever,” I shrug and sip my drink. “His name is Nathan or something,” Dylan says, and my head spins. Elpis howls in my head. “Cool,” I say, trying to play off my sudden feelings. “Why is he coming here?” “You don’t know,” Cameron sneers. “No,” I shrug. He snorts, “You wouldn’t.” “I’m not the alpha, Cameron,” I scoff. “Or the Luna,” I say, giving him a look. “Excuse me,” I say and head back to my friends. “What was that all about?” Vicky asked. “Oh, same old s**t. Cameron was being the ass he always is,” I respond. “Did you just call the alpha an ass?” Beth squeaks. “Yes,” I nod, and she laughs. We all laugh and continue with our night. “Excuse me,” I say, heading for the ladies’ room. I walk down the hallway, and then someone grabs me and drags me into a dark room. “Cameron?” I say with the faint scent of lemon bars waft into my nose. He nestles his nose in the crook of my neck, “I regret it.” I try to shrug him off, but he tightens his hold on me. “I regret rejecting you,” He whispers. “I don’t care,” I mutter. “You know you want me,” He kisses my neck, and I shudder. “Get off of me, Cameron,” I groan and elbow him hard. “I am the alpha,” He growls. “That doesn’t give you the right to assault me,” I say, elbowing him harder, causing him to release me. “I want you, Yvonne,” He whines. “You have your mate. You chose her, remember?” I look him in the eyes. “I don’t want her,” he says and tries to touch my face. I back away from him, “I don’t care.” “You were supposed to fall to the ground and plead for me,” he says. “You didn’t.” “I knew you were going to reject me,” I say. “You were an asshole to me my whole life, so I didn’t feel the loss.” “But- “He sighs. “Goodbye, Cameron,” I say, opening the door and squeezing out. “Yvonne,” He cries, and I ignore him. I walk over to the table, “I have to go home.” “Why?” Vicky stands up looking worried. “I just need to go,” I say, dropping some money on the table. "Have fun, guys.” “Yvonne,” Vicky follows me out of the bar. “Are you okay?” “I’m fine,” I fake a smile. “I am just exhausted.” “Okay,” She smiles. “I’ll see you tomorrow?” “Maybe,” I respond and hug her. I get home, trudge up to my room, and flop on the bed. It doesn’t take long before I fall asleep and dream about the majestic black wolf.
