Chapter 20:
Phoebe’s direction sense helped, but Helena wasn’t sure she needed it. She reached out with her mind and discovered the mechanical elements of the boats moored in the harbor. She might have taken a few wrong turns in the maze of tunnels, but she knew in what direction they needed to walk.
Often, they passed heavy wooden doors. The others told her the whole of the city was connected by underground, but she found it hard to believe. Rather than have backdoors, these buildings had secret doors to the not too secret tunnels below. This place would have made a wonderful hideout for criminals, except for the whole soul-sucking shadow problem.
The four shadows gave up following the group.
Rosa asked the priest, “What were those things?”
He answered, “I believe they were the souls
