Chapter 16:
With a hand on Ludmila’s shoulder and a motion with her fingers to follow, Helena returned to Deirdre’s side. There was a fine coating of dead insects the length of the craft, but they were no longer Helena’s concern now that they couldn’t attack her.
Inside the rope locker, Helena knelt next to her aunt and said, “She was attacked… Can you help her?”
Ludmila searched the small space. “What attacked her?”
“Magic… I’m not rightly sure. She contacted the other side and… a shadow attacked.” Helena looked between the three women as she spoke. None gave any indication of their feelings. The dim oil lamp only made the mood more somber.
“You three leave me alone with her. Let me see what I can discover the cause was. I’m telling you right now there is no guarantee she will recove
