Chloe’s eyes bounced back and forth between her silent phone on the dark wood table and the notes she was supposed to be reading clasped in her left hand. Her right hand tapped a pencil against her thigh in an agitated beat. The tapping sound barely registered on her mind. And it wasn’t the only thing her brain was failing to process.
