Chapter 10

762 Words
Adam's POV Months had passed, and our pack had stopped talking about the weak human, including her family. They all returned to their lives as if they hadn't lost a child. Henry became one of my father’s trusted personnel under his orders. Though he often made me feel like he knew something I didn't, I didn't object to his position. At times, Henry dropped hints about Lara without mentioning her name. He missed his sister, and he held on to hope that she might return. Since I became the next Alpha through succession, the pack asked me about my Luna. I informed them that the one destined to be my Luna was a powerful woman, and we needed to wait for her to reveal herself, much like how my father had met my mother. I fantasized about becoming the most powerful creatures alongside my powerful Luna—not with a weak woman who would end her own life. Today, my parents were at my house, and my mom prepared my favorite foods as we talked about my life without my Luna. During our meal, my dad spoke up. "Months have passed. Could we talk about her?" he said, not mentioning her name, but I knew he meant the dead human. "Talk about whom? Lara? I thought we had all forgotten about her. Why make her the subject again?" I set down my food and took a glass of water. "Now that you're an Alpha, how do you see yourself without a Luna?" my mom asked, persisting with her questions. "We all want to know about the next Luna. The pack needs her," she added. "I can find another girl who is beautiful and powerful. You chose her to be my Luna before, but now I have the right to choose." I had met new girls who could be my future Luna, so I saw no issue if that human never returned. I didn't want her by my side. "That was so sad for Lara. I wanted her to be your Luna," my mom's voice held a hint of sadness, and I couldn't understand why she longed for that human. Did she want our pack to suffer with an inept Luna? "She was not like you, Mom. She would never be as powerful as you. I want my Luna to be strong, not a useless and weak human. Werewolves are not for humans like her," I explained my perspective, still puzzled by her desire for that weak human. "That's what you think. But that woman, she was not ordinary." Before I could respond, my father intervened. "Let us continue eating our food. Let's not talk about it again." I fell silent, but they continued talking. I lost my appetite and declared, "I am full." As I was about to stand, my father spoke sternly, his voice seemingly coming from underground. "Be mindful of your decisions. You are not an ordinary wolf; you are now the Alpha. Your emotions shouldn't control you. Not everything you see is the truth. Be careful. The one who appears weak might be the one who can defeat you." "No one can defeat me." Though I didn't fully grasp his message, I assured him that no one could defeat me. I believed I was the most powerful. Silence settled around us. My father's gaze remained fixed on the food, and my mother didn't utter a word. They seemed to know something they didn't want to discuss. "Why the silence?" I broke the silence, wanting to understand their unease. "Just like how you reacted to her loss," my father replied without looking at me. "She was just a human. Human life is not that important." I wanted them to understand that Lara didn't belong with us. She was nothing to us. Disappointment filled my parents' faces. "Do you know something I don't?" I asked, searching for an answer. My mother looked at me, her eyes full of disappointment—something I had never seen from her before. "If you had given her a chance, you would understand what we're talking about." "But she was just a human. A weak, pathetic, useless, stupid human. She was nothing. What's the problem?" "A weak, pathetic, useless, stupid human? Are you sure?" "I knew it from the start. She was weak." "That's not the question." "What do you mean?" Again, silence enveloped us. The wind blew, and my father set the napkin down. His final words made me contemplate things I didn't want to know. "How sure are you that she was a human?"
