Time to Wake Up

1254 Words
I lightly tapped on Rose Laverne's door, but the only response was the faint sound of the air conditioning unit. I tried a more forceful knock, but still no answer. With a shrug, I turned the handle and pushed open the door. The first thought that crossed my mind was, "I hope she's not in the shower." Knowing my luck, I would probably walk in on her naked. Thankfully she was sprawled across the bed wearing a long t-shirt, snoring lightly. This girl is a deep sleeper, I guess. I stood by her bed and cleared my throat. "Um, Rose...wake up!" "Mmm...what...?" Rose mumbled in her sleep but didn't open her eyes. "Rose! Wake up," I said, a little louder and firmer this time. Her eyes opened. Her face twisted into a frown when she saw me. "Get out of my room! What are you doing here?" Rose snapped at me. "It's time for you to get up and have breakfast with William, then you are going to the office," I ordered. "f**k off. I'm not doing any of that. I'm going back to sleep," she said and pulled the cover over her face. "Rose!" I was starting to get flustered. It was like dealing with my cousin's five-year-old kid. Rose lay motionless on the bed, her eyes closed as if she was purposely ignoring me. I could feel the weight of my financial struggles pressing down on me as I remembered the looming due dates for my bills. Panic set in as I realized I only had a measly couple hundred dollars in my bank account, far from enough to cover all my expenses and buy food for the week. Mr. Laverne's words echoed in my mind - if I didn't do as he said, I wouldn't get paid. With a heavy heart, I knew what I had to do. "Sorry, Rose," I muttered under my breath, "but your ass is getting off this bed." I carefully removed the sheet covering her and was met with a bewildered expression. "Are you insane? Put me down, you weirdo!" she exclaimed. "Just following Mr. Laverne's instructions," I replied with a mischievous grin before scooping her up and placing her on my shoulders. I had no idea why he asked if I was strong enough for this task, but now I understood. "Put me down, you asshole!" she shrieked and kicked her legs wildly, causing us to stumble around the room. I managed to keep a firm grip on her as we made our way towards the bathroom. "Sorry, Princess, but it's shower time," I announced cheerfully, despite her protests. "You're not coming in with me, are you?" Rose exclaimed, looking horrified. "Oh goodness no. As much fun as it sounds, I have no desire to add 'shower buddy' to my job description," I reassured her with a chuckle. I turned on the shower, trying not to get drenched in the process. Once it was warm enough, I hoisted Rose under the stream of water, clothes and all. "I f*****g hate you," she said with fire in her eyes. I would be really scared if she weren't soaking wet and so damn adorable. "I'm going to let you finish the rest by yourself and wait for you outside. Don't be long, sweetie," I smirked and got out of the bedroom. I chuckled as I heard her cursing me out loudly. This girl is going to be a handful, I could already tell. She came out after thirty minutes, all dressed up and ready to go. I sighed in relief. I thought I'd have to fight her some more after the shower. She flipped me off and walked to the dining room. I smirked and followed her. "Grandpa! You have to do something about this p*****t!" she squealed and pointed at me. "Good morning to you too, sweetheart," Mr. Laverne gave her a warm smile. "He barged into my bedroom this morning and...and grabbed me!" Rose cried. "You need to throw him in jail this instance for assault," she concluded. "I simply helped her out of bed and put her in the bathtub," I protested. "Ah, wonderful, get ready for a long day at the office, Rose. I've got a lot to teach you," Mr. Laverne sipped his coffee. "You are not going to do something about him? Are you kidding me!" Rose wasn't going to give up yet. "He is doing his job just how I expect him to. Good job, Liam," he said. I was grateful to have such a great boss. And as for Rose....I'd be damned if I let her push me around. "Whatever," she took a bite of her toast and glared at me. The rest of the day was eventless. Mr. Laverne had Rose do some paperwork while I stayed by her side to keep an eye on her. You know..so she doesn't sneak out and run away. I went into the break room and got her some coffee. "Don't think this is over. I won't let you get away with what you did this morning, so you better watch your back b***h boy," she whispered when I put the cup down on her desk. "Maybe I should get you something cold instead of coffee to calm that hot head of yours. All that anger can't be good for your health," I said. She glared at me and went back to work. "I am done with everything. Can I go now?" Rose whined. Mr. Laverne looked at her and nodded. "Where are you going now?" "To Mason's school. He is throwing a party at his dorm," she said. "Alright, go right ahead. Liam will be driving you there and bringing you back," Mr. Laverne said. "Ha ha, no way. He is not coming with me," She chuckled. "I can't let you attend parties on your own anymore, Rose. You remember what happened last time," Mr. Laverne scolded, his voice stern and full of concern. "I HATE THIS!" Rose's voice rose in frustration as she stormed out of the room. "I can't wait to move out of this house!" Intrigued, I turned to Mr. Laverne and asked, "What exactly happened last time?" His face grew grave as he recounted the incident with a somber tone and furrowed brow. The memory seemed to weigh heavily on his mind, and I could sense the genuine worry he had for Rose's safety. "It's still a sore subject for Rose, so I won't tell you on her behalf. You should find out directly from her," he said. "Oh, and by the way, try to keep her away from a kid named Elliot," he added. "Well, are you coming or not?" Rose screamed from the other room. I smirked. "Take good care of my granddaughter. Do not let her falter your confidence. You are doing a great job so far," he said. "Thank you, sir, I'll be on my way," I said. As I looked at her, my mind raced with questions. What secrets did she hold? What kind of experiences had shaped her into the person standing before me? I wanted to know everything, to understand the depths of her being. But for now, all I could do was hope that one day she would trust me enough to share. In the meantime, I couldn't help wondering about the situations she had found herself in. My curiosity burned like a relentless flame inside me, begging for answers. Oh Rose, what stories you must have to tell...
