Erin’s POV
“It had seemed to happen so quickly, but in hindsight, they had been planning this take over for years. They had steadily been purchasing property and land around the main border for decades and we simply failed to notice. It didn’t help that we didn’t know of their existence until one tragic incident when a young wolf lost his temper and shifted. He couldn’t control the shift and he couldn’t control his wolf. The incident resulted in an entire family being slaughtered,” Mrs Driver pauses for breath and scans the room.
Satisfied that she holds our attention, she lowers her gaze back to the old journal of a reverend. “And so we went to war. But, before we coordinated, before we became organised and learnt how to tell who the wolves were, they had already taken a large amount of East Yorkshire. Their numbers were vast and the border to their new land erected. There was no escape for those of us within and the government gave up the fight and abandoned us to our new leadership and fate….”
The classroom is silent, we’re all staring at Mrs Driver in anticipation, despite already knowing what happened next. The humans lost the war. Those that were within the wolf land became servants of the wolves. A lot became farmers and agricultural workers. We grew their food, we tended their lands. We maintained their new home. But that wasn’t all.
“You will forever remember your place. Your daughters will be ours. Your lives are ours. We will place a small squadron of wolves in each town and city until you abide by the new laws,” Mrs Driver continues reading the journal. She tells us of the division of land. Within this new wolf land there are 12 wolf packs. Humans in their region serve them, and they serve the self proclaimed wolf king. “They were forsaken by their kin for their cruelty and actions, although now there are some packs that visit for business.”
“You are all in this class because you are fast approaching your 18th birthday, which means you will participate in the next hunt. Your name is automatically entered at each event. For your first event your name will be entered once, twice for your second event and so on. When you or your family request income supplements, your name is added once again. Each of you will arrive at a given location and wait to see if your name is called…” and here is the reason the girls have been given a new class timetable.
My breath hitches as I prepare myself to fully learn our history and what will happen to me.
