Alice leant against Jake and gazed from the window down to the street below. There was a long silence as each pondered the problem of the dove. After a while, she spoke.
“Instead of trying to find another queen or princess, perhaps I should try looking at events.” She sprang over to the computer and typed Anglo-Saxon battles into the search engine. The seventh century was a turbulent period for Lincolnshire and it captured her attention. Among these events she discovered Werburgh, the daughter of Wulfhere of Mercia, the nun who hoarded away the treasures of the abbey of Ely, burying it in a place known only to her and two sisters to save it from the plundering Northumbrians.
