CHAPTER NINE Never had I seen the museum as vibrant as it was that night. We’d created a Hollywood phenomenon, a spectacle of grand proportions. The sky was sprinkled with stars, making an effervescent canopy for the movie stars attending the gala. They’d attracted a press corp large enough to give the event more clout than any other exhibition opening night in years. Howard’s work was on display, as well as that of a half dozen other artists who’d been featured in my PBS specials. And off to one corner of the main gallery was the work of Theo Gray on loan from his own gallery across town. After a particularly successful interview with Sandy and Howard Garth, we thought we might actually have Theo on the hook for his own interview. My specials were drawing a decent audience.
