Chapter 6: Why?

Four years had passed by in a blink of an eye, and I am still living in the Earl’s household as a young master.
I have once thought of leaving this house as soon as I am able to walk, but something is keeping me here.
It was the question that I wanted to ask four years ago, why didn’t you abandon me?
“Caine? Did you remember what I just said?”
“Huh? Ah! Yes.”
This year, like any other noble child, I have started taking private lesson with my mother being the teacher. I was taught about the history of this empire and some nonboring countries, as well as stuff about society but not just limited to noble.
Normally Charlotte would be busy helping out with the territorial management, but Charlotte have been pregnant for 7 months and so the Earl insisted that she shouldn’t over work herself.
So, without anything to do, she started teaching me.
“Caine, what’s wrong? You have been blanking out recently.”
“N-No I’m fine, Mother.” Yep I have started calling the Earl and Charlotte; Mother, and father. At first it was to not get suspicious but now It’s felt completely natural to call them.
For some reason I have grown too attach to them, more than I should have. That’s why I’m nervous, especially now since Charlotte is pregnant.
I never had a sibling in my past life, so I’m kind of exited to know what it’s like, but will she abandon me?
It’s her own blood right? I’m not even her child…
I want to curse my past self for getting too attach to this house.
I have always known that I will one day have to leave this house, but I kind of don’t want to.
“Caine!”
Charlotte suddenly shouted, causing me to almost jump out of my seat.
“Ah! Yes Mother?”
“You were blanking out again. Not matter how much I call you; you didn’t answer.” Charlotte pouted.
“I I-Im sorry.” I held my head down to evade her gaze.
“Caine, be honest… Tell Mother why you are blanking out all this time? Is there something that is bothering you?”

“N-No it’s nothing!” Without realising, I have already shot down from the chair and ran out of the room.
Damn it! Why did I do that?!?!
Now she will definitely think something is wrong.
“Caine!” Charlotte voice suddenly echoed around the corner.
So, I immediately started running again with my small legs until I reached a particular room. The room was the family archive, it is full of books that had been collected for over many generations.
Since the they deem that I do not have any mana, they didn’t give me any lesson relating to magic, plus children starts learning about the basic of magic at five years old. However, I have occasionally been coming to this place secretly to read about the books that are related to magic.
So far I have finished reading the magic guide for beginners and I think that I have already grasp gist of it.
In total there 8 type of elements; Earth, Water, Wind, Fire, Illusion, Lightning, Space, Time.
There is also one more but it’s not quite an element when shown in the status bar, it’s the power of healing. This power could only be wielded by people who has the title ‘Saintess’ bestowed upon them, and only in female.
The higher the level a person is in an element, the more proficient and powerful the person is in that particular element, making them a fast learner.
Normally speaking, a person must be at least the age of five and blessed by the church in order to be able to see their status bar, but…

No Matter how many time I read it, I’m always shock.
Back when I was still an ancient dragon, I knew that I had vast amount of mana since ancient dragon gains a fixed amount of mana each year, but I have never been able to quantify it like now.
So, when I became a human and learnt how to open up the status bar, forget about the other ones, the mana capacity alone shocked me through the roof!
For a NORMAL human, their mana increases after increasing their level through killing beasts, and the amount of increase is the amount they have at birth. If a person is born with 20 mana then their mana will increase by 20 every time they level up.
And what’s up with this Demigod rank?!?!
As for the elements, to be honest I haven’t really paid much of attention in that area in my previous life. Normally I would just sleep all years round in an isolated cave.

However, even after knowing that I’m proficient in all elements, I still don’t dare to attempt to use magic with my unrealistic amount of mana.
What happened if I lost control and accidentally blew up the entire planet?
The thought of it quickly make me shudder. No wonder they say dragons are World Eaters.

After reading for half an hour, I finally stopped and went out of the room.
It seems dinner will be ready now, I should make my way to the dining room.

Just as I was walking down the hallway, I suddenly felt an ominous aura behind me that sent a shiver down my spine.

A pair of hand suddenly landed on my shoulders; my body couldn’t help but shiver again.
“Caine Von Rustichel. You are very good huh? Making your Mother search around the entire mansion to find you!”

I slowly started to turn my body around, but when I saw Charlotte’s face.

Scary! Mother is truly scary!!!
Out of all the powerful beasts and monsters that I have seen in my past life, none have ever come close to her!
I tried to look away into the corner to avoid her glares, but two hands momentarily held my head back.
She was still angry, but her expression then quickly soften up as if someone was turning over a new page.
How can her expression just change like that?
Second ago, her expression looks like a demon, but now she looks like an angel…
Then without any warning, she suddenly hugged me.
“M-Mother?”
“Caine be honest with Mother. Why are you suddenly behaving usually?”
“I…”
What should I do?!
Should I just ask her?...
Sigh, since it has come to this, I guess I have no choice…
“M-Mother, will you a-abandon me?”
Hearing that, Charlotte momentarily turned confused.
“No, why would I abandon you?”
“Is that why you have been acting usually recently?”
“Don’t worry, Mother will never abandon you!” Saying that, while embracing me once again.
That is exactly what she said in the past.

“But… why?”
Charlotte suddenly chuckled, “Do you even have to ask?”
“…It’s because you are my precious son.”

It’s warm, mother is warm just like last time…

“Caine!”
“Y-Yes?”
“You dare make Mother run around the mansion to look for you, do you know how worried Mother was?”
“I-Im sorry!”
Mother suddenly pouted and held up one finger, “Hmph! As punishment, you will not allowed to have puddings for this entire week!”
“M-My puddings!!!” I momentarily fell to my knees.

The question that I had sat in my heart for four years had finally been answered today, but at the cost of my puddings.
