CHAPTER 28 The storm subsided around midday. Layken and Seymour left to examine the damage and let the goats out of the pen. Sara Beth persuaded Tab to get into the bathtub and insisted he give himself a good scrubbing, including his tangled hair. While he bathed, she looked inside the child’s bag that held his belongings. She pulled out a halfway-clean set of clothes. There was no doubt about what her next sewing project would be. The boy needed more than one change of clothes. The ones he had were hardly more than rags. She could do nothing about the worn shoes with the hole in the toe except to clean them up. Maybe they could buy him a new pair. Or perhaps the church would donate some. But at the same time, they couldn’t afford to do anything to draw attention. She’d talk with Layk
