Chapter 2 Dante POV

1828 Words
I was distracted from my thoughts by my dark inner musings, where I had been gathering my thoughts on the next move I needed to make in order to take control of the fifth Kingdom. Once I overthrew prince Lenus, I would become ruler of all vampires. Many had tried in the past to do what I was attempting, even prince Lenus himself tried to take over all 5 kingdoms when he was younger. It's the nature of our kind. We were violent by nature, the fight for the top was a game among us that had been blazing on for centuries. Our first fathers, who were also known as the higher council, had decided eons ago to split our kind into five different covens, so there would always be a voice of reason. If one of the covens became uncontrolled or gave into the darkness completely and became mad with blood thirst, the other four coven leaders could step in. Destroy the mad leader or the revolt against him, he would be destroyed and then that would make way for a new leader to step in and regain control of the coven. So far, I am ruler of four out of the five kingdoms, the old way didn’t sit well with me. Covens warring, scheming and killing princes at a whim because they didn't agree with a decision or a direction he was heading in. Made up reasons why he needed to be destroyed just because the others did not like him. It was an old way that I planned to change. My attention snaps back to what had originally captured it. I glanced at my second in command and life-long best friend since we were just kids as he was walking towards me with a beautiful red head at his side. She has that dazed look about her that tells me Darius has already fazed her. As he gets nearer, he sits himself across from me with a cheeky grin on his face, causing me to raise my eyebrows at him. He huffs out a laugh and sweeps his hand in the girls' direction. "Lunch is served. My Prince can not say I have never got him anything ". It's why I own a human nightclub, many of them in fact, so that our kind can feed easily. My rule was we didn't eat to kill humans, we fed to survive, that is all. That was another reason why I was taking over the five kingdoms, so I could move our people into modern times. Humans today can easily find means to try and kill us. Technology is advancing, knowledge is advancing, because of that we need to find ways to live among them undetected. They were not like before when we were the more powerful species. Back then, killing and slaughtering them for sport was no problem. In the old ways, we would snatch hundreds of humans for our blood feasts and banquets, but now it would eventually lead them to us. As I said, technology is now too advanced. Evidence will be found we exist. People have discovered us in the past, causing us to have to wipe out entire villages or faze thousands of people to forget us. It was getting too risky. We had to change. My new teachings to our kind was to drink enough to survive, heal them and then faze them and place them back into their lives unaware of what happened. Which again was why I owned multiple human clubs, which all had vampire-only sections. The humans called it the VIP lounge, call it what they liked, it was basically our restaurant, and they were the menu except they would all leave without a clue and fully alive. They would all just think they had an excellent night out drinking and dancing and the alcohol had made their memories fuzzy. Pushing myself into a standing position, I concentrated on the sweet girl in front of me. Slowly, I glided behind her and pushed her long red locks onto her other shoulder. It reveals the smooth creamy skin of her neck. I can hear her pulse, her blood flowing through her veins. Placing my hands on her hips, I then glide them up her body and hold her in an embrace, hugging her from behind like a lover would after I get my fill. I would faze her to believe that this encounter was just a dance with a stranger. I slowly start swaying from side to side as my thangs lengthen in my mouth. I’m about to bite into her delicious neck when all of a sudden my movements freeze as I'm hit with this scent that invades all my senses. It's like a sweet jasmine mixed with honey. I bent and sniffed the girl in front of me again in confusion, but where just seconds ago she smelt so appealing now she made my nose burn like I’d sniffed acid. I step back from her as the feeling of her in my arms feels wrong, causing Darius to look at me questioning. Spinning around, I sniff the air like I am possessed, trying to find what that sweet smell is. My feet moved me to the edge of the balcony that looked over the dance floor at the throng of bodies that were moving to the current beat. My eyes are glancing everywhere but nothing is catching my eye until they land on her, her movements still as if she can sense my attention like she’s feeling it too. Then she starts swinging her head around searching the crowd, her long black hair swishing from side to side. I was frozen as she turned slowly, almost as if in a trance. Then she looks up and freezes. She's staring in my direction, the strobe lights flash across my face and I see her inhale sharply. Then I went back into darkness. The realization hits me of what she could potentially be, when I am lit up again, and she stumbles back in shock. Without a thought, I jumped the balcony and landed right behind her, unthinking if anyone saw, not really bothered at all, not that they would have with how fast our kind moves we can move undetected in front of the human eye it was cameras that was the issue. Even still, that didn't matter to me at that moment. It was my club, my CCTV, but all that matters right now is her. Her scent was so strong now my c**k hardened instantly and the need to grab her and mark her was overpowering. She spun on her heel as if to bolt and then became still as a statue. Her beautiful green eyes were wide with shock as we came face to face. She was the most beautiful creature I have ever seen. I need her now like my next breath, visions of her tied to my bed flash through my mind and I smirk at the fantasy. Then there is this loud voice that's screaming MINE in my mind, confirming what I’d suspected. But no, no it can’t be, surely not. It's unheard of now, not for millennia and not with a human especially. Surely the fates are not that cruel. I need to get out of here before I claim her. So I bolted out of the club and away from her. I ran until I was hidden in an alleyway clenching my fists trying to stop myself from running right back. That's where Darius appeared in front of me with a worried look. He would have seen it all, seen me nearly expose us to humans. Of course, he did. He always has my back. "Did anyone else see ? " I growled out between my gritted teeth. He shook his head. "No Dante, they didn't. They were all feeding. Who was she?". I didn't even know who she was, but I knew what she was. I squeezed my eyes closed as images of her long black hair assaulted me. "Mate" I let out in a whisper like the word was a secret. Darius gasped and took a step back. I understood his reaction, mates haven’t been known to us for a millennium. Not one vampire had found their true fated mate in all of that time, ever since the covens split and warred with each other. Liek we had been cursed because of it. Ever since King Philipe killed his own mate, so other covens didn't think of him as weak, stories are told that we are all punished now by the fates for his actions that they don't deem us worthy for the precious gift of mates. But why now, why, when I was at war, would they send me a mate, a human mate? She will become my enemy's greatest target against me. " Dante, you know what this means ? You can not feed from another. Now you have scented her, you need to get her and take her back to the castle. Or even just hide her away somewhere so no one will know. I mean, are you sure ? Our kind don't have mates," he asked in a state of panic. Sighing, I shook my head at him, running my fingers over my temples from the sudden migraine that came on. " I'm sure, Darius, everything in my being wants me to go back to her. The red head's scent was vile to me the second I scented her. As soon as I smelt her smell, my actions became not my own. Why would the fates give out mates now and why to me ? And why a human Darius? If Lenus finds out about her ". My voice sounded weak to my own ears, I was pleading with Darius to know the answers. I was never weak. I was known for my anger and ruthlessness. She was already making me weak. I can not and will not have a mate. But that thought didn't stop me from sending Darius to follow her home though, or ordering him to find out more about her for me and where she resides. It also didn’t stop me telling him to make sure she was safe before he returned home with her information. I was doomed. The mate bond was already in effect, my beautiful mate was already plaguing all of my thoughts. If only she was stronger, a stronger species, so she wouldn't be seen as a target. If only she was my kind so she could defend herself against the monsters that lurk in the night. The fact she was human only bothered me for her safety, nothing else. I ran at full speed through the enchanted woods and back to the castle and went to my office away from everyone. I know sleep will not come tonight so I wait for Darius to return.
