6 JACK I caught up with Benson and his men a week after I left Butte. A week after I left the warmth of the bed I shared with Lily, and the warmth of Lily’s body. It had been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, walking away. I knew that when the papers printed the story about how I’d robbed the train, killed an engineer and fled with a metal box full of US currency, she would hate me.
