12 JACK Sending a telegram to Washington was quick. Just two words. I resign. The reply would be slower in coming and I had to meet the colonel one last time before I took Lily and left town. Where we went, I had no idea, but it would not be for the Pinkertons or the colonel. I might even be happy living with her huge family, if the men her sisters married didn’t feed me to the pigs first.
