Kaya’s POV
After I left my old home, Frey and I went to her condo. I placed my bags in her guest room and took out my laptop, immediately beginning to type furiously. I was emailing my secretary about the details of my next move.
I was so engrossed in my work that I didn’t notice Frey staring at me. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and that’s when I realized Frey was sitting in front of me, getting up to answer the door very unhurriedly. That was odd, but I continued to work. I had so much more to do. Now that I was going to have a baby, I had to be prepared for the future. A plan was hatching in my mind, and I smiled as I started to think along the lines of that plan.
Suddenly, while working on the email, I looked up, only to be startled by a magnified version of a human face inches from mine. I literally screamed but calmed down when I saw it was Josh, Frey’s boyfriend.
“Hey, Kaya, what’s up? I heard you were ditched by your groom, your one and only true love?” Josh said in a very amused tone.
“I’m thankful that you can find joy in my suffering, Josh,” I replied in a very monotonous tone.
“Oh, babe, who says I find joy in your suffering? I’m clearly very, very sad. I’ve been crying since Freyalon told me about you. I even prepared a gift for your wedding. I’m so sorry I wasn’t there that day. If I were, I would have married you in a heartbeat—who could refuse such a cutie like you... Ow, ow!” He was cut off by Frey’s sudden attack.
Their antics made me laugh. It’s always been like this. Josh is a terrible flirt, and Frey is a weird combo of shyness and boldness. She’s always shy and as quiet as a mouse in front of everyone else, but bold and funny around me, Tristan, and Josh. Thinking about Tristan brought me back to reality.
Indeed, Tristan had left me, betraying my trust in the worst way possible. If he had cheated on me, that would have been better than ditching me on our wedding day—the day we were supposed to tie the knot forever.
I was so excited for this day. I had wanted to tell him that he was going to be a dad on our first night as husband and wife. But here we are. There must have been a change in my expression that brought Frey and Josh back to the situation.
“Uh-huh, uh-huh,” Frey faked a cough, garnering my attention to her and a very silly-looking Josh. He was wearing a blood-red sweatshirt and white jeans. It was the first time I noticed his outfit. He looked like Santa Claus.
“Well, Kay...” he trailed off, unsure of what he actually wanted to say. I knew him well enough to know that he wanted to ask me something but was scared to hurt me.
I gave him an expectant look, urging him to go on with whatever he wanted to say.
“Frey, what are your plans next?” he blurted out so fast that I wasn’t sure what I heard. It wasn’t until Frey slapped him on the head that I understood it wasn’t my ears malfunctioning but his mouth or brain.
I laughed, and that made Frey laugh too. She pulled his ear, saying, “Can you be serious sometimes, Josh?”
To which, ever the overdramatic person, he screamed, “Ow, ow, ow, you cruel lady! Who abuses their boyfriend in such a way?”
They went on like this for a couple of minutes until I got a call from my secretary, Lily.
What she said next was really disturbing. It wasn’t something I couldn’t handle, but it was something I hadn’t expected my own family to do. Judging by the way it was done, the style suited my dad, Liam Argos Hartwell. He couldn’t wait to kick his daughter out of the family.
I immediately sprang into action, telling Lily to alert the PR team and also to not make a fuss about this news. I wanted to lay low for now and not make any announcements regarding my company. I asked her to contact the media to take down the news and suppress Mr. Liam Hartwell.
Let the show begin.
While I was doing this, Frey and Josh were staring at me as if I were some kind of weird animal in a zoo. “What?” I asked them.
“What’s going on, Kaya? You’ve been acting totally weird for the last hour,” Frey asked worriedly, and Josh nodded in agreement.
“Well, my parents couldn’t wait to announce to the whole world that they’ve kicked me out of the family and that I’m on my own. There’s also an underlying threat in the news that anyone who tries to help or side with me will be going against the Hartwells,” I said with a shrug, nodding in agreement with my own words. That’s the whole summary of what happened.
I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I didn’t see the questioning gazes of my friends.
“So?” Frey asked.
I looked up at her, asking, “So?”
She gestured with her hands, saying, “What are you going to do? What are your plans?”
“Well, for starters, I’m suppressing the media and getting a hold of the news, just not letting it spread. I don’t want to go against my own parents, no matter what they did to me. As you know, I don’t want to look bad in front of everyone by doing bad things against my own parents.”
Josh looked troubled after listening to me.
“What next?” he asked.
“Well, what next...” I drawled out, a smirk creeping onto my face. Indeed, what next?
