Emma Axel had gone in the town. He’d been gone for hours, he just said he was going for a ride. He didn’t even come back for dinner, and when Aunt May called him, he told her that he had met an old friend and that he was having dinner with him. I knew it wasn’t true. Axel didn’t have any friends who lived around here, I knew it because I knew everything about him, just as he knew everything about me. I spent the whole dinner moving food from one side of the plate to the other without eating anything. When I heard that I was about to break down again, I apologized and left, putting up the excuse of a headache to avoid being seen by others in that state.
