Tristan
It wasn’t lost on me that Avery had snuck out of my office while Mother was berating me.
“Why did you say there were rogues when there wasn’t?” She yells at me. “Were you trying to get rid of us?”
“Maybe,” I mutter.
“Tristan, you need to take this seriously. Wendy is going to be your wife, Luna, and mate,” she says.
“Sure,” I mutter.
“You need to be grateful,” she huffs.
“Grateful for what, Mother?” I groan.
“Wendy is a lovely girl from a good family. Her bloodline will only strengthen ours,” She states.
“Right, and my happiness doesn’t matter to anyone,” I say.
“You can be happy with Wendy,” she says.
“Like how happy you are with Father,” I snort.
She sighs. “So, I have been hearing a rumor through the pack,” she says.
I sit behind my desk and tent my fingers. Avery’s scent still lingers and it’s driving Dragos nuts. I do my best to maintain my composure. “What rumor is that, Mother?”
“I can feel it, Tristan. You found your mate,” she says.
I shrug.
“Was it that girl that just ran out of here?” She asks. “Because- “
“No, that wasn’t my mate,” I lie to her face. “That was just a new secretary.”
“You know the law, Tristan. No humans,” Mother says. “And whoever this mate is, you need to reject her.”
I sigh and look away from her.
“It’s for your own good, Tristan. For all of us,” she says.
I press my lips together, “I have work to do, Mother,” I say.
“Very well,” She huffs. “I expect you to be home later for dinner. Wendy will be pleased to see you.”
“I’m sure she will,” I snort and watch Mother leave the office. I let out an annoyed sigh as Dragos is still whining for our mate.
‘Find her,’ Dragos hisses.
I rise from my chair and sniff the air. Lavender and vanilla take me to the orientation room. I linger outside the door and watch Avery. She seems comfortable interacting with the others. It seems they are drawn to her.
‘She’s a natural Luna,’ Dragos says.
I return to my office to resume work, but it’s hard for me to concentrate. My mind only wants to think about Avery. ‘I can’t have her,’ I tell myself. ‘It is not allowed.’
‘But you need her,’ Dragos says. ‘We need her.’
‘I want her so bad,’ I say to him.
‘She is your mate,’ Dragos says. ‘The only true Luna of this pack.’
‘But why does she have to be human?’ I speak.
‘She must have a strength that the Goddess saw within her,’ Dragos responds.
‘It’s not fair,’ I whine. ‘I can’t reject her. But I can’t have her.’
‘I will never accept Wendy,’ Dragos reminds me. ‘Any children with her will be inferior in strength.’
I sigh and rub my face. “I have to work, Dragos,” I say out loud.
Hours pass as I put myself on autopilot. My mind will not let go of Avery. My heart has already decided she is my life. I have to find a way to make her my Luna. Five o’clock comes around, and I grab my things and head out for the day.
“Have a good night, sir,” Anna says as I walk out.
“You too, Anna,” I smile at her.
“Good evening, sir,” Todd greets me as I slip into the limo.
I just nod as he shuts the door. My mind is all over the place as we drive home. The city passes by as it turns into the surrounding woods. The mansion looms ahead. I am starting to dread seeing it. It feels like a prison. I am the alpha but have very little power in my life.
“Tell Julie I say hi,” I say to Todd as I exit the vehicle.
“Thank you, sir,” Todd smiles.
I smile back and slink into the house.
“Tristan,” Randy calls out to me.
“What’s up?” I ask.
“Just another day in paradise,” he says.
“No rogues?” I ask.
“No, none whatsoever,” He grins. “Though we did detect the presence of a few vamps.”
“Victor and his gang?” I ask.
“Most likely,” Randy nods.
“Tristan,” Father’s deep voice echoes down the hall.
I sigh, “See ya,” I mutter to Randy and turn as Father and Grandfather march towards me. “Yes?”
“Your mother informed me that you faked a rogue attack to get rid of her and your fiancée today,” Father states.
“And?” I say.
“Your fiancée was worried sick,” Grandfather adds. “She came here crying, thinking it was an emergency.”
“Son, I don’t think you are taking this marriage seriously,” Father states.
“That’s because I’m not,” I mutter. “I’m not excited or happy about it, Father.”
“Tristan Emerson,” Father snarls. “You are going to marry Wendy Decker, which is final.”
“Yes, I know,” I roll my eyes. “I will marry the b***h but don’t expect me to be happy about it.”
Father slaps me hard across the face. “Don’t be late for dinner,” He growls and walks away.
Grandfather lingers for a moment, “I hear the rumors, Tristan. The pack knows. They always know when their Luna has been found.”
“I don’t know what you are talking about,” I shrug.
“You must reject her,” He demands.
“Why?” I say. “You know a chosen mate will never give me the strength that my fated one will.”
“Reject her, Tristan,” Grandfather barks and walks away.
I take another deep breath and shuffle to the elevators. I want to sit for a few minutes before trudging to dinner.
“Tristan,” Wendy squeals as I walk into my room.
My heart drops as she runs over and throws her thin arms around me. “What are you doing here?” I ask.
“Oh, your mother let me in,” she says. “I wanted to get design ideas for our room.”
“There is nothing wrong with my room,” I grumble.
“It needs an update, Tristan,” she whines and makes gestures. “It’s so drab.”
“So what?” I say. “It’s my room.”
“It’s going to be our room, Tristan,” Wendy giggles. “And I want to feel at home.”
“You could have your own room,” I suggest as I shrug off my suit jacket.
“No, silly,” Wendy laughs. “We can’t make babies in separate rooms.”
I try not to shudder when she mentions babies, “We have time for that.”
“Daddy says we should start trying right away,” She waggles her eyebrows and wanders over to the bed. “I want to get some new linens,” she sits down. “This is not going to work.”
I sigh, “I would like to relax, Wendy.”
“You can relax with me,” She pats the bed.
“No, I need to be alone,” I say.
Wendy frowns, “Why?”
“I just had a long day. I want to be alone,” I say.
“Fine,” She pouts and stands. “Kiss?” She puckers her lips, and I just stare.
“No,” I mutter and walk away from her.
She lets out a frustrated growl, stomps out of my room, and slams the door.
I sit on the bed with a sigh. “Gods, when will this nightmare end.” I sit for several minutes before changing out of my clothes and putting on something more casual. Then I try to watch TV, but nothing works to get my mind off Avery.
‘Tristan, where are you?’ Father mind links me. ‘It’s nearly dinner time.’
With another annoyed sigh, I turn off the TV and shuffle out of my room. “I am doomed for misery,” I say as I walk towards the elevators.
“Tristan,” Mother says as I walk up to the family.
“Let’s go in,” Father says.
I silently follow them into the dining room. Wendy’s parents are present as we enter. She looks at me with a frown as I say nothing to her.
“Are you not going to greet your fiancée?” Mother asks.
I take a deep breath and flash a fake smile at Wendy, “Hello, Wendy.”
“Tristan,” she mutters.
We all sit as the omegas come out to take our dinner order. “What would you like, Alpha?” One asks.
“I don’t care,” I say.
“Tristan,” Mother gives me a look.
“We have some salmon,” the omega says.
“That’s fine,” I shrug. “Bring me some Scotch, too,” I tell her.
The omega nods and scurries off.
My mind wanders as everyone else starts talking. I just want to see Avery again.
“Tristan,” Mother nudges me.
“What?” I say.
“We are talking about the wedding,” she says.
I refrain from rolling my eyes.
“I want to have prime rib for the dinner,” Wendy says. “And maybe chicken.”
“Fine,” I mutter.
The omegas come out with our food, and I stare at my plate. It looks good, and I hate to waste it, but I have no appetite. I grab the glass and down the scotch, “Bring me the bottle.”
“You aren’t going to get drunk, son,” Father grumbles.
“What about the cake?” Wendy says. “What flavor do you like, Tristan?”
“It’s cake, who cares,” I say.
“My favorite is red velvet,” Wendy says.
“Fine,” I say as the bottle is set down. I pour myself another glass. I down another glass and stand. “I have to take care of something,” I say. “Randy,” I bark to my beta, who is sitting with his mate and pups.
“What’s wrong, Tristan?” Father asks.
“Nothing for you to worry about,” I say as I step away.
“What’s wrong?” Randy asks as we walk out of the room.
“I am going out on the town,” I say. “Keep an eye on things.”
“Okay,” Randy says. “Be careful. Victor Erasmus has something up his slimy sleeve.”
“Oh, I could use a good vamp fight,” I snort as I walk away. I dial my phone to call Todd. “Sorry, Todd, but I need the limo tonight.”
“Okay, sir,” Todd responds. “I’ll be right there.”
I go to my room and slip into a pair of old jeans and a leather jacket. Todd is waiting with the limo when I walk out the door.
“Where to?” He asks.
“Apex,” I say and slide it. Something is telling me that I need to go there.
“Apex it is,” Todd smirks.
Dragos becomes restless in my mind as we drive through town.
‘What’s wrong with you?’ I ask.
‘She’s in danger,’ he mutters.
‘Who? Avery?’ I ask.
‘Yes,’ he says.
The car stops in front of the club, and I get a faint whiff of lavender and vanilla. “She is here,” I smile and nearly trot to the door.
“Good evening, Alpha Emerson,” a rogue bouncer greets me.
“Hello,” I say as he lets me in. Avery’s scent grows stronger as I move into the club. It’s filled with half-naked, gyrating bodies. Wolves, vamps, and others all gathered in one place to drink and dance. But I am focused on one. Women all try pawing at me, but I ignore them. “Avery,” I say out loud as I follow her scent. I catch another smell, too, that makes my blood boil. “Erasmus,” I hiss and rush through the club. I then see something that fills me with rage. Victor has my mate and is biting her. With a growl, I lunge forward, grab the slimy vampire, and throw him across the room. He hits the wall with a sickening crunch as I keep myself between him and Avery.
“Tristan,” The vampire grins and leaps toward me.
