Chapter 8Monday evening Tom got a phone call midway through dinner. He took his phone out of his pocket, looked at the caller ID and said, “I’ve got to take this.” After about fifteen minutes, Tom came back to the table and apologized. Gary raised his eyebrow. “I don’t want to spoil dinner,” Tom said and refused to elaborate until after they ate. “Mrs. Abernathy, your roast was delicious.” Tom took the last bite from his plate as he pushed back his chair. “Shall we go into the great room for coffee and a piece of carrot cake?” Gary put his napkin down on the table and rose.
