Sophia walks past the construction site once again, her steps slow and deliberate, her eyes instinctively searching for Liam. As she passes by, her gaze lingers on him as he effortlessly lifts heavy materials. She’s aware of how out of place she feels in her elegant attire, yet she finds herself drawn to the raw, honest energy of the site. Her mind begins to wander as she waits for a chance to see him again.
Murmuring to herself, as if trying to justify her actions. Just passing by. That’s all. It’s not a big deal. She’s lost in thought, not paying attention to her phone, when it slips from her grasp and falls to the ground with a loud thud. She bends down to pick it up, but before she can, Liam appears out of nowhere, rushing to her side.
Bending down with a friendly smile, his voice rough yet kind. “Are you alright?”
Flustered, she quickly stood up, trying to collect herself.
“Oh, uh, yes! Thank you.” Her face flushes, embarrassed to be standing on a construction site in her designer dress and expensive heels.
Noticing her heels and the outfit, his smile widened with amusement.
“You don’t look like you belong here.”
Chuckling nervously, brushing her dress.
“Yeah, I don’t. I’m just passing through. Not really my scene.”
She tries to regain composure, standing a little straighter but still feeling out of place.
Leaning slightly on his tool, giving her a curious but kind look.
“Guess that makes two of us. You don’t see many people like you around here.”
Glancing at him, her voice was soft and almost sheepish.
“I’m not sure what kind of people I’m supposed to be around.” She pauses, reflecting, then smiles slightly.
“It’s just a lot of pressure, you know? Everything’s planned for me, my future, my path, but it feels so hollow sometimes.”
Nodding, his gaze steady but understanding.
“Yeah, I get that. My life’s not planned out, but... I think I’m okay with it. I just take it day by day. Keeps things simple, you know?”
There’s a beat of silence as they both look at each other. Sophia is unsure of how to respond, but something about his words makes her feel lighter.
Glancing around the site, the noise of construction all around them, and then back to Liam.
“You seem so... grounded.” She says it before she realizes it, and it feels honest.
Shrugging with a grin.
“I guess that’s what hard work does to you. You can’t get lost in your head when you’re lifting beams or hauling bricks.” He chuckles, and there’s a warmth to his laugh.
“Maybe you should try it sometime. The real world’s a lot simpler than it looks from where you’re standing.”
Laughing lightly, the words stick with her, a flicker of realization crossing her face.
“Maybe I should. But I’m not sure if I could ever handle all that physical work.” She gave him a playful smirk.
Playfully teasing.
“I could give you a lesson on lifting things... but, uh, I’m guessing those heels wouldn’t do you much good.”
Laughs, feeling more comfortable than she expected.
“Probably not.” She took a step back, adjusting her dress.
“Well, thanks again for the help with the phone... and the advice.”
Nodding, his smile still lingering.
“Anytime. And hey, if you ever want to stop by and see how we do things... no harm in it, right?”
Smiling softly, a little more to herself now.
“I might just do that. Take care, Liam.”
Giving her a small, warm wave.
“Take care, Sophia.”
As she walks away, she can’t help but feel a strange sense of longing, the weight of her future, and her uncertainty pressing in, yet something about Liam’s simplicity and sincerity makes her feel... grounded. She doesn’t know where it will lead, but for the first time in a long while, Sophia feels a little less lost.
