2Klamath Falls was dark at night. Only the main parts of town had street lights. Samantha was completely in the dark. She stumbled over something and fell to the ground. Her palms and knee stung. She got up. Nothing was broken and she could still walk. Samantha was regretting turning down the offer of a ride, but after what she’d learned of the differences between the groups of shifters, she realized that it was best to appear impartial. She couldn’t be seen to be favoring either group. Otherwise, she’d lose the trust of the other. Then her research would be boring and the city would be unhappy. If Samantha ever wanted to do anything else with her life besides teach freshmen how to write a proper research paper, then she’d have to succeed here. All the houses looked the same. They were a
