Emily heaved a sigh of relief in secret when she saw the Bell family members walking through the front gates. However, she failed to notice Ronald who was standing at the side. He had a gloomy expression and was scrutinizing her from afar.
The Bell's luxurious mansion was built with an ancient Chinese flair to it. Every blade of grass and shrub was trimmed to perfection.
After seeing the desperation in his daughter's eyes, Mr. Wilson ended up holding back his temper and decided to stay for lunch.
As Emily's body was still recovering from her miscarriage, her father had planned to take her back to the hospital after lunch, but Emily was afraid that it would arouse suspicion among the Bells, so she decided to stay the night.
After seeing her father leave, Emily's first instinct was to find Ronald. However, after searching high and low, she still didn't manage to find him.
"Do you know where Ronald is?" she asked one of the housemaids.
The housemaid replied, "I overheard Sir Bell call for him to his study."
Emily thanked her and left.
Emily waited patiently for her man to come downstairs on the sofa in the living room. Her expression reflected the heaviness she harboured in her heart.
Grandpa Bell must be pressuring him to arrange for a press conference again.
If she were to be honest with herself, she didn't want to make their marriage public. If the world knew about her marriage, she might feel even smaller than she already was and have nowhere to hide. She felt like she really didn't deserve to be with a man like him at all.
"Hey, where's my thanks?" a voice that came from above said.
Emily lifted her head and saw Leah leaning on the railing of the second floor in a red dress. Leah was peering down at her with a snarky grin on her face.
"You know, if it weren't for me, Grandpa would not have kept pressing my brother. Shouldn't you glad that you'll soon be known to everyone as Mrs. Bell, the envy of the masses?" she said in her signature lackadaisical tone.
Emily frowned and remained silent.
Will she truly be happy? If not for the fact that she knew how Leah was in person, she might've been grateful for her help, but she was fully aware of her true intentions.
If Grandpa Bell had pressured him in front of Emily and her father, Ronald would only feel like he'd been used.
Rather than keeping this a secret from Mrs. Bell, she felt that it would be better for Ronald to despise her, so that she had a higher chance of leaving the Bell family.
Seeing as she remained silent, Leah propped up her chin using one hand and shot her a scornful look. "I know exactly what you're thinking. Is it so wrong of me to let my brother see you for who you really are? Did you actually think that you would succeed in using him as a stepping stone to rise to stardom? I didn't think anyone in their right mind could possibly stoop so low. Oh wait, even trash can be recycled," she hissed.
Emily tightened her fist. She looked up at Leah and said as calmly as she could, "Look, Leah, this matter is between your brother and me. Frankly, it's none of your business,"
"Did the trash just talk?" Leah laughed maniacally and kept the insults coming. "Trash belongs to trash cans. We shouldn't let it dirty the whole house, should we? What an eyesore to my pretty eyes,"
Emily couldn't think straight. She couldn't be bothered to argue back so she took a deep breath and ignored her.
The smirk she had on her face gradually turned into a scowl. "My dearest sister-in-law, can you bring me some water from below? My pretty lips are extremely parched," she shouted.
"Did you suddenly become a cripple or became blind? Why do you need someone to help you quench your thirst?" The calm voice of a man could be heard from the corner of the second floor. His handsome face slowly came into view as he walked towards the railing. His sturdy torso was seductive, yet so unapproachable.
Emily was surprised. She lifted her head again.
Leah's face had stiffened slightly. "Brother, I was just cracking jokes with sister-in-law here. You didn't think I was being serious, right?" she said with pursed lips.
The man didn't so much as glance at her. He lowered his eyes and gracefully rolled up his shirtsleeve instead. "Scram," he said in a low, frosty tone.
Leah was left speechless.
She glared at Emily out of the corner of her eye for the last time before quietly scampering into her bedroom.
