The Hybrid

Phoenix|| My eyes blinked multiple times as Scarlett continued screaming. At first, I thought it was one of her stunts to get me into trouble but when her friends rushed at her and took off her hands from her face, I saw it. This was no stunt. She was really in pain. The skin on her cheek was like boiling lava. Her entire face had turned red in different shades that separated from the point of agonizing pain to the receiving side. Her nose was running, and her eyes were already swollen from the tears as her friends helplessly tried to calm her. What have I done? My heart started racing as panic rose within me. My wolf was on edge, and I began to tremble as my eyes lowered to my hand. They were their normal pale color. I could not believe that I had inflicted such pain on Scarlett. I could not believe that it was from me. I couldn’t have been capable of that. I was an ordinary omega. I couldn’t possess such abilities… Except the people were right all along… I was a hybrid. A dangerous blend between a wolf and a sorcerer. “No,” I whimpered as the first of my tears dropped. I returned my eyes to my hands once more, probing my wolf for an explanation but just like me, she was also confused. My legs started moving back as the shock of the situation washed over me. I couldn’t be a hybrid. They were going to kill me… “She is getting away!” One of Scarlett’s friends pointed out and everyone turned their attention to me. “Somebody, get her!” “No, she is dangerous. Get the special guards!” I shook my head, trying to speak. Trying to explain myself to them, but no words left my mouth. People started gathering around me and my eyes turned wet as I knew that this was bad. The bright sky had lied to me. This was not a good day. This was a nightmare. My nightmare. “Guards!” Someone echoed in the growing crowd and before I could realize it, about five hefty men from the special squad grabbed me. “Argh!” I groaned, trying to loosen myself from them. “I… I didn’t do anything— I am innocent!” “Liar!” Scarlett’s friends chorused before I could even finish. “She tried to kill Scarlett with her powers. She slapped her for no reason and just like that her face is now burning!” At this rate, they were going to execute me without trial. I managed to squeeze my hand through the men holding me down to get their attention. “I didn’t do it… I didn’t mean it. Please, listen to me—” “Keep your mouth shut, Witch! The Alpha is going to decide what to do with you once and for all!” One of the guards growled while the others started pulling me away from the scene. “No, please… wait. Please…” I cried, hoping that someone would listen, but they didn’t. The people of Greenwood Pack never liked me, and the guards were not an exception. Deep down, they all wished for me to be punished for a crime I didn’t even commit. They were not even going to wait to test if I was truly a hybrid or not. They just wanted me dead. Tears streamed down my eyes as things started happening too fast. The guards dragged me, pulling me away from my spilled groceries and Scarlett herself. I tried to explain once more but it was useless, the noise from the crowd had overpowered every sense of silence in the market. Even if I screamed, no one would hear me. They took me to the palace and dumped me in a very dark room. As soon as my body dropped to the ground, I pushed myself up again and ran after them. “Wait, let me speak to my aunt—” I tried to say but the door was sealed shut. I cupped my hand to my face and tried to control my sobs. My body was shaking and shivering at the same time. This was worse than a nightmare. It was my doomsday. “Hello! Please listen to me… I am not a hybrid! I am just an omega! How can I be a hybrid?” I cried out loud, but my voice was filled with fear and pain. The sound didn’t go past the door before reverberating back at me. But even in that low moment, I recalled Aunt Saldana’s lessons. When the world was against you, there was only one person around to save you and that was you; ‘Only you could save, you’. I had to be strong. I had to defend myself. Quickly, I wiped my tears and waited. Seconds after, the door burst open and I jumped towards it, hoping they had somehow heard me, and my aunt was there to rescue me. But my eyes met with the alpha himself. Alpha Marshal. His chest was fuming and the little hope I had cracked open within me. “I hear you little wretch burned my daughter with your sorcery!” He growled so loud; that I felt my heart drop to my legs. But I refused to give in to fear. I fisted my hands and stood strongly before him. “I didn’t do it, Alpha. Scarlett was riling me up… calling me names and I don’t know… I don’t know what came over me… I—” “You burned her.” My heart cracked at the surface of his response, and I felt my throat constrict, yet I wasn’t giving up. “Yes, she got burned, but I—” The instant the words left my mouth, he clapped his hands and turned to the door. “Guards!” He yelled and the hefty men that had brought me returned to the now crammed-up cell. “She has admitted her crimes. Set up the stage, I have important guests. This will serve as a good form of entertainment for them and a warning to the rest of her kind. Burn her alive.” “No. No… Alpha, I am not a hybrid. This is a misunderstanding. I am not a witch.” I stammered, struggling to get my voice heard. He stopped walking and turned to glare at me. “You are a witch; Phoenix and you have proven your sorcery by attacking my very own daughter. Your death shall be slow and painful.” My world came to a staggering stop as his words echoed in my ears. It was really happening. He wasn’t going to listen to me. The men started dragging me out once again and I just felt detached from the reality. I was thrown into another trance, and I felt it. The same strength swirls through my body, fueling my muscles, not with anger this time around but with pain, so deep it tore through the pockets of my existence. My body started moving in and out of consciousness as the guards threw me onto the pile of arranged wood. They chained my legs and arms, preparing me for my tormenting death. Yet in that small space between the void in my head and the reality before me, I saw him. The one, the universe had prepared for me. The one that my wolf had felt all day long. The one, who was supposed to end my misery. My wolf recognized him, even in those last moments of my life. My mate. He was sitting by Alpha Marshal’s side, watching me with an amused yet shocked expression. His stormy eyes shifted, almost as if he felt the mate’s pull too. My hopes started returning as the possibility of being rescued by this beautiful stranger jumped around in my head. My heart paused and everything started happening in slow motion. I could hear my aunt screaming in the crowds, begging the alpha to stop the sin he was about to commit but he didn’t listen. I heard the people’s excited screams, but I only watched my mate as he remained calm, not even raising his finger to stop Alpha Marshal, and then it occurred to me, that he wasn’t here to rescue me. My supposed mate was the important guest my death was supposed to entertain.
