As the echoes of Sophia’s feet disappeared behind the door, I made a beeline for the windows.
They were large and perfect for my size. We were on the second floor and as I looked down, I smiled. The height was something I could manage.
Without giving it a second thought, I pushed the windows open, and I jumped down, landing on my toes —or so I thought until I tried to get up.
“Ouch.” I cried out. s**t.
My right ankle burned with pain so strong it took the grace of the goddess for me not to cry out. My eyes became blurry with tears as I bit down on my lips and tried to examine the damage. It was already swelling and was only going to get worse if I didn’t do something about it soon. If I tried ignoring it, I wouldn’t get far and I needed my legs to be functional for this escape to work.
“King Asher is going to have fun tonight. She is something...”
The voices of the guards approaching filled the area and even though I wanted to stay and give them a piece of my mind for thinking I was some form of entertainment for their dumb king, I knew it wasn’t a smart move. What I had to do was focus on escaping with my injured ankle.
But before then, I had to find a good place to hide because I couldn’t outrun them with one leg. Instantly, my eyes darted around the area, as I searched for a good spot. The closest trees to me were a couple of yards away, if I tried running to it, those guards would surely get to me.
My best bet was running back to the building, right behind me —just until the guards passed.
There was a single door to my left and I could only hope that it led to a place without guards. Quickly I got on my good leg and limped as fast as I could to the door. Thankfully, it was unlocked. I slipped in and closed it, sealing off my scent from the approaching men.
I leaned against the door, waiting to hear them walk past, so I could run back out to my freedom, but my wolf began to stir uneasily within me and that was when I began to pay attention to the room, I had slipped in.
It was some sort of utility room. Dull walls, cartons of stuff no one wanted to organize and then, there was a worktable. My brows furrowed as my eyes continued to move till, they got to the window.
Shit.
My heart did a double take as I came eye to eye with none other than Snowball himself.
His face morphed into a grin, and he raised the glass he was holding to his lips in a very laid-back motion. “Are you lost, strange one?”
His voice snapped me out of the daze his presence had brought and the first thing my body thought to do despite my injury was to take flight.
I turned around as fast as my injured leg would permit me, but I was a second too late —or maybe he was a second too fast.
With a speed I felt only in a split second, he caught my upper arm and pulled me back.
The force caused me to collapse right into his chest and in that brief second, time stopped, and our eyes met. My wolf froze.
His stormy blue eyes drew me in, pulling me into a pit so deep, yet so inviting. A rich musky scent filled my nostrils causing my wolf to dance within me as it sang the word, ‘mate’ again.
I already knew he was our mate since our encounter in Greenwood pack but somehow, my connection to him suddenly felt like a new one. It felt like I just met him, and my wolf was drawn to him. Even if I didn’t want it.
I wouldn’t want him. Not after he gambled with my life and then bought me like a piece of furniture.
“You are truly a strange one, aren’t you?” He whispered, his voice dragging me out of the pit and reminding me that I had to hate this man.
“Let me go Snowball or I swear to the goddess I am going to burn you.” I threatened, pulling myself out of his hold.
“Snowball?” His hold on my hand loosened as he broke down in laughter like I had cracked the best joke in a century. “Where the hell did you get that from? Snowball…”
I c****d my eyes to the side and took a very good look at him. I knew he was arrogant, but it didn’t occur to me that he had a loose nut in the head as well. But the longer I glared at him, my wolf continued dancing within me —obviously trying to point something out to me and as I looked closely, I saw it too.
This snowball looked different.
He was leaner… and was it just me or did his hair grow longer?
I felt a tingling sensation begin to grow within me in those seconds. I was stuck between making a run for it and comprehending why he suddenly looked different when the door burst open.
Another snowball barged in, and my blood turned cold. There were two of them!
I knew three Lycan kings ruled our realm but as an omega, I wasn’t privy to details about how they looked or how they were even related.
“You!” The one at the door growled the second his eyes zeroed down on me and I felt like a cornered little pup as my eyes darted between the two of them in shock.
“Did you really think you could escape me?” His hands grabbed me, shaking me back to reality and once again I found myself wanting the goddess to give me the ability to burn the place down, so I could escape. But nothing happened. I had to do it, the old-fashioned way.
“Let me go.” I hissed, fighting to be set free but his hold went even tighter as he pulled me close to his face.
“Sophia told me just how stubborn you were and as much as I didn’t want to believe her. You leave me no choice. I am going to teach you manners.” His voice sent chills down my spine, but I refused to be intimidated.
“I am not your child to be taught manners. Let me go,” I said through gritted teeth, pulling myself hard enough to get out of his hold. The brisk movement made him lose his grip and I took the chance.
I reached for the door. But who was I kidding… There were two of them and one of me —even if the other one, only watched.
The one closest to me grabbed me once again, pushing me roughly against the wall, caging me with his thick muscles till I had nowhere to run.
“Argh! Let me go!” I yelled in frustration, trashing my body around but he pinned me further into the wall, piercing his sharp claws through my upper arms.
His eyes burned on my skin, waiting for me to scream out in pain but I knew greater pain.
“You are going to have to do more than pierce my skin to make me stay!” I hissed, aiming to headbutt him but just like his brother behind him, he was too fast.
“Don’t push me, flaming whore.” He hissed and my control snapped.
I wasn’t going to stand by and let him insult me. So, I did the only thing I could think of giving my restricted movement. I threw my head back and spat at him.
The sound echoed in the room and time stopped.
We both glared at each other and in that moment, I saw the difference in their eyes. This snowball was the one who brought me from my pack. He didn’t have the blue tint his brother’s eyes had. His eyes were only stormy and dangerously glowing with anger.
“How dare you?” He growled and I let a smile defiantly dance on my lips.
Like a growing flame, I saw his irritation grow to the point where his control broke.
He raised his right hand, and I watched it in slow motion as his claws appeared. They began to come down at me and I closed my eyes, bracing myself for what I knew would eventually bring me death.
