Selima’s heart rose in elation. Hardly daring to believe the good twist her fortune had taken, she dressed hastily and followed the woman out of the hammam. It was twilight now as the two women left the building. Selima had spent all day hiding in the baths, and her hunger had blossomed again until she could scarcely see straight. Her only thoughts were about this kindly widow and whether she would have dinner already prepared when they reached her house. Scarcely were they outside the door, however, when two pairs of strong hands grabbed Selima’s arms. “You won’t escape this time,” gloated a harsh male voice, and Selima looked up to find herself in the grips of two burly police officers.
