The evening sun glittered off the waves, the last embers of its touch enough to tempt the keenest surfers to linger in the breakers. A warm breeze carried hints of fish and chips and the clatter of falling pennies in the arcades as it wafted past chattering families plodding their way up the hill from the beach. Chase knew every one of these sounds like the back of his hand – but what he didn’t know was why he was hearing them. “That looks nasty,” said a voice. “What happened to you?” The world around him slowly began to take form. The sources of the sounds and smells swam into place as he found himself sitting on a bench on the promenade. “Hey,” said the voice, which he thought he recognised from somewhere – it was a girl’s voice. “Are you OK?
