Chapter 4: He Can’t Be My Mate.

1780 Words
E M B E R I enter the mansion with Clayton by my side when that fool, Graham, makes his way, only to grab me by the arm forcibly. I growl and wince in discomfort, but before Clayton can step up, Graham snarls, "What? What are you f*****g dreaming? So, what if you are just a meek human? You thought we would treat you well?" he leans in and threatens me, "We don't differentiate, b***h. Those who intrude deserve no respect." I throw him a glare. Clayton steps up now. "Easy, Graham! She is injured." Graham rolls his eyes and scowls, "I don't care." He then smirks at me. "You wait and watch how our Alpha will rip your heart out. I would enjoy those cries of yours — " I stop to look around when a familiar intoxicating scent blows past my nose, but then this third-in-command snarls and pushes me into a room. From the rich mahogany furniture, books filling the shelves, and the paintings on the walls to the dark maroon curtains with specks of gold not letting a single ray pass through and light up the room still, everything here gives a very royal vibe. But what's interesting is this scent, which has become prominent now that I am in this room. "Alpha!" Graham lets go of me and bows down to greet followed by the rest, when the person at the center roars. "What is the meaning of this?" I flinch a bit and ignore Rayne's sudden unusual purring. "I have never been disturbed for trivial matters, yet here you all are ruining my peace —" he scowls, and I slowly raise my gaze only to see a very God-like, well-built, muscular man behind his desk with a head of luscious, flaming red hair, and around 6'4” tall. So, this is the ruthless Alpha Sebastian Knight I have so heard about. I flinch when his gaze shifts to me. Our eyes lock, and I feel lost. I don't know, but his dark green eyes don't seem as soulless as the rumors. It seems like apart from the two of us, there is no one else in this world. I shudder at this feeling in my stomach, which is very fluttery, and my heart is pounding as if about to burst out when I let out a low gasp, and my eyes go wide with horror. No! Midnight Hunters Alpha can't be my mate. No, this can't be. On the contrary, Rayne howls in delight at the conclusion. "Look away, bitch." The fool, Graham, pushes me down and presses my face against the floor before he passes me a smirk and then speaks to his Alpha, "We found an intruder, but it seems to me that the Beta doesn't wish to behead this female." I yelp in annoyance, but why does it feel like I heard him growl under his breath too? But then I hear him again, this time a little more clearly, "Is that so? It's the first time, Messer, that you have disobeyed me. Do you plan to rebel?" His deep voice. It's sexy. I roll my eyes. It's hard to define, but his deep, raspy voice already makes me weak in the knees. Rayne howls in agreement. What the heck! I clench my fists on my lap and gnaw at my lips in embarrassment. I then take a peek and catch a glimpse of him raising his eyebrows, but when he looks back at me, I dart my eyes away and try to ignore his intense gaze. However, that's when Clayton steps forward and bows out of respect. "I apologize, Alpha, but as you can see, the rogue, or whoever she is, isn't in good condition and seems innocent — " Graham coughs up and scoffs, interrupting his superior, "Who cares about the girl, Alpha! We kill whoever enters our territory anyway. So, who cares what state she is in?" In the blink of an eye, I feel as if a weight has lifted off me. I hear something like someone is choking, making me slowly look up, only to find the arrogant i***t held against the wall by his neck. My eyes move to the man holding the fool with a hard glare, not caring that Clayton helps me get back on my feet. I wonder when he came here? Wasn't he sitting a moment ago? With his back towards me, the Alpha menacingly mumbles, "I know we have been friends since childhood, but it doesn't help your case to interrupt your superiors, Gamma." Graham, the fool, whimpers, and struggles in his Alpha's grasp, trying not to make eye contact with him. I stare at this man for far too long and notice how chiseled his jaw is and how athletic his body is. His hair is styled with a wind-swept look against his ivory-tanned skin, which makes him look very hot and seductive. My face flushes up, and I shake my head, looking away and trying to get rid of unwanted thoughts. The next moment, he lets go of the blockhead and snaps, "Leave us alone." Huh? Who's he talking to? I frown in confusion and then notice Clayton helping out a pissed Graham, who gives me a stink-eye before everyone bows and turns to walk out of the room, leaving me alone with their Alpha. Wait, what? I blink and turn my head. Yes, I'm indeed alone with the Alpha of Midnight Hunters and my mate, which somehow makes Rayne overjoyed. He blurts out, "Who are you? What are you doing here?" It makes me quietly bat my lashes and look at him, and makes me want to answer, and obviously, it makes Rayne super happy. "Uh, Emb — my name is Emmy, and I got lost." I clench my hands as I perjure myself and stare back at him in silence when I inappropriately break it by impulsively blurting out, "I don't know what you think about yourself, but you shouldn't treat people like they don't matter." No response, well, except that stare of his makes me pause as I shudder and gulp. Uh-oh! I cough up, "I mean, it sounds like you mean a lot to the people who left the room, so you should —" "Don't bother. You have no right to speak in my business. Stay out of it," he interrupts me quite rudely. Ouch. Rayne whimpers. But it is understandable. I mentally nod and pout before I look away when he startles me with his touch, crooks his finger under my chin, and angles my face towards him. Electricity immediately courses all over my body, and I flinch. He looks shocked too. "What the f**k!" Wide-eyed, I bite my lip at the tingling feeling in my stomach as I look up at his long eyelashes. Oh my, they are so beautiful. He looks at me as if he is avoiding something; as if he is hiding a secret not only from me but also from himself. Curious, I go to speak, but he sighs. What's up with him? I frown and open my mouth to speak when he lets go of me and steps back as he rubs his forehead and snaps disgustingly, "This — what is the meaning of this? How is this possible? How can I be mated with you, a human?" And he looks at me in utter disgust. Mated to a human? Excuse me? I raise my eyebrow, offended. I am not a human but an Alpha and his foe. Wait, this is it! Yes, I should pretend to be one. A weak one. "This connection between us and the spark I felt — this can't be," he voices his concern as he shakes his head and briefly glances at me. What? Not that I want to, but my heart churns and is filled with despair. This feeling of rejection is almost hurtful. I snatch my hand away and scowl, "What do you mean?" He takes time to answer, and I look at him with my eyebrows raised impatiently. He looks at me in anguish and his face softens momentarily before taking a deep breath. His expression clearly tells me what he is thinking and — it's impossible. Rayne growls at me. I shrug at her and scoff. What? Even he said it. There has to be a misunderstanding. He can't be my mate. Ugh, why Moon Goddess? We can't be together. I don't even want a mate. I blink back to reality when he says, "I know this may be a shock to you since you are a human, but I think you are my mate, Emmy." We are only looking at each other with no words spoken between us while my mind searches for the answer to his statement, only to cough up and copy his tone. "What the f**k!" He notices and barks, "What?" I shrug, "I was told I stumbled into werewolf territory. Is it really?" I raise my eyebrows quizzically and continue, "I have no f*****g clue what to believe or listen to. Are you guys all werewolves? Or are you wizards and witches? Or vampires?" I notice him flinch and mentally pat my back. I can pretend to be good; I should be an actor. I faintly smirk when he grabs me by my arms and pulls me closer as he growls, "Don't compare me to those leeches." I shudder under his intense gaze while I try to wiggle out of his grip, only to stumble when he pulls me closer and leans in, grabbing me by my waist this time. However, I immediately push him away and shut Rayne's whimpering as I straighten up and clear my throat. "Well, in that case, let this meek human be out of your hair and your territory this very instant. Let's pretend we never met, and this never happened —" I notice his face initially fall as he looks grim with pursed lips, but then who cares. Rayne whimpers. Oh, yeah, except my wolf. I roll my eyes mentally at her and ignore my suddenly aching heart. I turn around to leave, but he shocks me by grabbing my wrist once again and pulling me back to face him before pinning me against the wall. I gasp and look up at him in bewilderment while Rayne blushes and purrs at our bodies' unexpected proximity. I blink and cough up, "What the heck are you doing — " He leans closer and breathes his hot peppermint fresh breath on my face, "I don't think you have a say in it, mate." What?
